FAMILIES IN CHARLOTTE WHO LIVE WITH RATS, ROACHES AND MOLD ARE LEARNING HOW TO FIGHT FOR THEIR RIGHTS. GOOD EVENING I’M GENEVIEVE CURTIS. WE’VE BEEN COVERING THIS PROBLEM AT LAKE ARBOR APARTMENTS IN WEST CHARLOTTE FOR YEARS. TODAY RESIDENTS MET WITH LEGAL ADVOCACY GROUPS FOR SOME HELP, REPORTER AARON EDWARDS SPOKE WITH RESIDENTS WHO WERE AT THAT MEETING AND AARON SOME OF THESE PEOPLE DON’T KNOW WHERE THEY WILL BE LIVING. Reporter: THAT’S RIGHT GENEVIEVE AND THIS IS A DIFFICULT SITUATION FOR MANY RESIDENTS, IF YOU ARE FACING — A FEW ARE FACING HOMELESSNESS IF THEY DON’T FIND A PLACE BY THE END OF THE MONTH. THE MEETING TODAY WAS FOR RESIDENTS TO LEARN THEIR RIGHTS AND HOW TO HANDLE THIS DIFFICULT SITUATION. I’M HERE TO GET JUSTICE. Reporter: RESIDENTS HOPING TO GET JUSTICE PILED INTO THIS REC CENTER THIS MORNING. THIS SITUATION REPRESENTS AN INJUSTICE. IT’S VERY SERIOUS AND I THINK THAT NOT ONLY DO THEY NEED PHYSICAL HELP, BUT THEY NEED EMOTIONAL SUPPORT. Reporter: NEIGHBORS HEARD LEGAL ADVICE FROM THE NORTH CAROLINA JUSTICE CENTER AND LEARNED WHAT TO DO IF THEY ARE FACING AN EVICTION. OBVIOUSLY THEY ARE CONCERNED ABOUT WHAT IS COMING. Reporter: RESIDENTS SAY THE APARTMENT COMPLEX OFFERED THEM AN INCENTIVE PACKAGE TO HELP LEGAL EXPERTS TOLD THEM TO HOLD OFF FOR NOW. WE ALREADY HOMELESS. SO WE NEED HELP. Reporter: JAZMINE JOHNSON SAYS SHE WAS FORCED OUT OF HER APARTMENT WITH HER MOTHER AND ONE-YEAR-OLD JUST A FEW WEEKS AGO. WE’VE BEEN IN AND OUT OF MOTELS, FORCING US TO BE ON THE STREETS. Reporter: SHE SAYS WHILE THE MEETING WAS HELPFUL IT STILL DOES NOT FIX THE BIGGER PROBLEM AT HAND. RIGHT NOW WHAT THESE PEOPLE NEED, WHAT WE NEED, IS HOUSING. WE NEED HOUSING, ENOUGH FOR ALL OF THE MEETINGS IN THE TALKING, WE NEED HOUSING. IF WE CAN’T SOLVE THE SITUATION AT LAKE ARBOR THAN WE CANNOT SOLVE THE HOUSING CRISIS IN CHARLOTTE. Reporter: THE CITY DID REFER 10 FAMILIES TO THE EMERGENCY RELOCATION PROGRAM, SEVEN FAMILIES ALSO APPLIED TO THE HABITAT FOR HUMANITY NEW
