We Applied For An Apartment | Thoughts On Quitting Van Life

We just applied for an apartment It’s like literally the first one we looked at. Yep that’s it! It’s the first apar… well, actually we looked online but we applied there because they were giving you two months rent free and they gave us a $500 gift card We figured that two months rent free was pretty nice especially because we’re trying to sell our van and it will give us time to kind of get that all squared away But yeah, we’re really excited about this and just wanted to share that with you guys but we’ll be sharing our whole move-in process and everything like that with you and all that fun stuff For now, we’re gonna go get a beer with our friends. Here we are at Triple Lindy in Portland, Oregon. Outsiders on a Friday afternoon This is my go to bar lately I’m a neighborhood local. Today we are cleaning out our van so that we can show it to people this week. Everything’s all good. And gotta take out this coffee machine here I’ve gotta sweep Don’t gotta do that much But yeah, let’s get to it So the last vlog you guys probably watched and if you haven’t watched it You can click right here or click down below and check it out But we are selling our van and kind of like quitting van life for a while. We decided that we wanted to move to Bend Oregon but couldn’t really find anything that we liked in Bend that was for rent We can’t really buy a house right now just because we just aren’t really ready for that right now We decided to live in Portland. Before we lived in a van We lived in downtown Portland, so… and living downtown again would be really fun and also good for us because we want to travel kind of like out of the country a lot and the Portland Airport is not too far away from where we’re gonna be living. And we also found an apartment that’s like right next to Planet Granite, which is our favorite rock gym So yeah, that is the update on that But we yeah we’ve just kind of been living at my mom’s house and kind of like having that weird waiting in-between moment of like what we’re doing with our lives and what we’re doing next and for me I’m like super type-a and I love to plan things I always have to kind of be in control and know what’s happening. To not know where we were gonna live for a bit there was really stressful for me. So we definitely found a place like pretty fast, but we did make sure that when we looked at this place it felt like the right place for us to live. After we had applied for the apartment we were really excited and that’s how I knew we were kind of like on the right path because yeah, like about van life and everything I wasn’t feeling that excitement like I used to and I think that was my intuition kind of like telling me that I was ready for something different and ready for a new adventure and yeah, it’s kind of been a struggle a little bit just because we have been doing van life for like the last three years and like our whole brand kind of is around this lifestyle so I kind of went through an identity crisis with like our business and kind of everything that we do because I was like oh, no now that we don’t have a van, like what are we gonna do now? That makes us like completely different people. I don’t know why I was thinking like that There’s a lot of expectation to kind of live up to this like van life lifestyle expectation to share about it, an expectation that we’re gonna want to do this dream lifestyle forever when it’s in reality, just another adventure. It’s just something that we’re doing, you know until we don’t want to do it anymore. So yeah, that was kind of like an interesting thought process I went through over the last kind of like week. Anyway, we’re at my mom’s right now and we got approved for the apartment. So we move in on Friday. We have like four more days till we move in and our plan is to move in I guess with what we have. We have maybe like four or five boxes of stuff and that’s about it. We have no furniture We’re gonna move into this apartment and have nothing pretty much, so it’s gonna be kind of weird. It’ll also be nice to kind of like take our time and buy things that we really like furniture wise and yeah, I’m excited to share that with you guys because I really like interior design. I think it’s really fun. That was like my favorite thing about you know decorating our van and like designing our van and the whole process of building it was being able to kind of like design it in the way that I really like so I’m excited about apartments and living somewhere where I can have my own space and yeah, super stoked about it. I am spending my day kind of going through some of my goals and intentions for the month. But anyway, yeah, I’ve kind of been going through a crisis here, um with thinking about what we’re gonna share on our YouTube channel and part of me was like, oh, no, we’re not living in our van anymore so like our life isn’t interesting and people won’t really want to watch us. Which is kind of like a fear mindset like holding me back from doing things I actually want to do and that kind of bummed me out thinking like that because I really wanted to continue making YouTube videos. I think it’s probably one of the most fun activities that Cody and I do together So today I was like fuck it. I’m gonna make vlogs and talk about whatever I want and hopefully people like it Just trying to get myself out of my fear comfort zone mindset and approach things differently and do things I want without being scared of people not liking it. This is what I use for goal-setting so I have this one it’s called I think I’ve showed it to you guys before, but it’s called Power Sheets This is the really cool part. You kind of like write down all your goals. Sp there’s like monthly goals here, weekly goals here, and daily goals here. So I’m gonna go kind of go through that today Alright, so I’m all done writing my goals for March. One thing I told myself is that you don’t have to have it all figured out and this goes for anybody I guess, because we don’t have to have everything all figured out all the time and sometimes you figure out things as you go. So right now me feeling kind of lost with our business and things I want to share, I don’t have to have you know a set plan or like everything figured out right now. I just have to do things and then usually motivation comes from action, so Number one goals, priorities, are sell our van. We don’t want to have to pay for a van and our apartment. And then make health number one. Your outfit is the best. Lookin’ real good Working hard or hardly workin’ Cody’s working on a project for another van lifer I am making rice in the instant pot because I’m hungry This is Planty and Planty is about six years old and he came into Cody and I’s lives when we got our first apartment in 2013, so we’re really excited to give him a new home in our new apartment and yeah, I don’t really know what kind of plant it is It’s got like stripey leaves Yeah, anyway I’m gonna go sage the van. Do you wanna help me sage the van? I probably should. Yeah, I think you should probably come with me I’m just waiting for Cody to get ready to sage So when we bought this van we did like a sage thing in the van in one of our videos, and then we buried the sage in the backyard, so we’re gonna do that today because it feels like a cycle, like a good way to end things on a good note. This is the sage I have it’s a lavender so we’re gonna use one of them for our van and one of them for our new apartment and the other ones just gonna be in our presence. We need some, like Bob Marley music. So our intention for this is to clear out everything in our van so that the next person that lives here and buys it can enjoy it and appreciate everything that we put into it and all the love and care that we put into this van. All right, we’ve saged it up, our rice is ready We’re ready for a new beginning. I think I’m gonna end this vlog right here. Just because The next vlog is gonna be us moving into our apartment on Friday. So, we’ll pick up then. See you guys later!

I started watching you two because I was just dicovering van life, but I stayed because I like your personalities. You two seem really down to earth and goofy and just generally like people I'd love to have a conversation with. I was a bit upset when you anounced that you were going to sell the new van so soon after getting it, but ultimately it's your choice and I'd much rather watch you do something you enjoy and are happy about than have you stick to producing content your heart's not in. Please don't worry about adapting your channel.
Also, as someone living in Europe, I'm excited about the prospect of you potentionally coming here! 😀

Edit: Since it's Friday, have you moved into your apartment?

I relate to this so much! I also have a sorta specific question I’m wondering you have advice on now that I realize you live in Oregon!! So 2 years ago I moved into my Mazda5 and travelled the US and Canada and started making videos about it. But living in a Mazda5 was a short term decision so that came to an end after 6 magical months. I’m hooked on van life but was broke… I also fell in LOVE with making YouTube videos so I decided to chase down other adventures in Hawaii, which is where I’ve lived for the last year and a halfish. The channels definitely gone through ups and downs but I am still quite set on building out a proper van by next year, which is how I found your channel because you guys have one of my favorite builds. So um my relatability point is that I have gone through the crisis of “what is my channel” and balancing between making what my viewers want and what I want… and let me say I took quite a hit once I stopped making van content, but I’ve also had lots of success covering other things and it has been a cool adventure! Now of course my channel doesn’t support me and I haven’t found wide stream “success” by any means but it is beautiful to know you have full creative control and that the wonderful thing about YouTube is people do get attached to the personality and there is a lot of loyalty involved! So I’m sending you good vibes and I’m sure with the success you already have, you’ll be able to figure out other parts of yourself that people will love to know about! You mentioned a climbing gym? That sounds super interesting to me! But anyways relatable moment over… I do have a question that feels almost serendipitous that I clicked this video cuz I haven’t watched many of your guys vlogs before! There is a big chance my entire family is moving out to the Portland area and I agreed to move out with them! It may happen as early as this winter, but my plan would be to get an apartment for a year and then move into a van by the end of my lease. If I wanted to make roots in Portland but continue living in my van… do you think it’s a practical expectation to find a good parking spot to live (like renting a driveway from someone or an RV Park?) or would I be stealth camping side streets and doing walmart parking lots? And how is driving a huge van around the city? I’ve been thinking a lot about this as these family plans have unfolded over the last month and I’m just dying to feel more settled in my plans… any advice you have would be super helpful! And I analogize if you’ve already covered a lot of this in another video… feel free and link it to me and I’d be grateful to watch it. Anyways this comment got LONG I just feel like there’s a lot of overlap to cover 😅 the new place looks awesome though and I’m so happy for you guys! Congrats you got this 💪🏼

I realize you might have your own way of planning things and this is just going to be unsolicited advice, but I noticed something in your planning process that might help you. I found that differentiating between projects and actionable items helped me a lot in getting my projects moving.

Make sure that your action items are actually actionable and not just projects. For example, "sell the van" isn't really actionable – there are a lot of steps involved in selling a van, so that's actually a project. Actionable items related to selling the van might be look up KBB value, take pictures of van, write down mileage and condition, post that information to Craigslist. So something is actionable if you can execute it right away and it's clear what you need to do to complete the task. I hope that helps. 🙂

Best of luck! I'll keep watching you guys whether you're living in a van or not!

I love your guys' van but more importantly, love your personalities, your style, the way you film and edit, etc! You guys do your own thing and stay true to yourselves and the real supporters will stay!

I'm so sad because I found your channel not long ago by watching your old van tours, but I will stay subscribed to see how you will make the transition from van life to apartment life.

I'm sure there are people who might not watch your channel anymore if there is no van content BUT that doesn't mean there isn't another fan base waiting to discover content that can come out of your new adventure. I believe that knowing what your viewers want is important but even more important than that is enjoying your life, being happy with the changes and challenges awaiting you, and setting goals that lead you to where you want to be down the line and if you make those things a priority people will watch you. You'll lose some viewers for a bit and then you will gain a new audience and those of who don't mind whatever content is coming so long as it's the two of you and your pup, will stick around.

I love all of your goal setting, tarot reading, type A SWOT analysis life living stuff. You seem more genuine in this vlog and about your future which is really refreshing! Good luck with all of your new projects✨✨ Excited for your content to evolve and grow with this new chapter!

My husband and I have been thinking about van life recently after wanting to minimize our items and after a horrible move to a new apartment and wanting to travel more. I am glad I found your channel! Super excited to be able to see your journey in new lands!

Since you guys are going to be more stationed in Portland. Could you guys maybe start a series of “things to do” in Portland or other parts of Oregon, or the PNW? I’d be really into that since I’ve been wanting to roam around Oregon and the PNW for a while now. 💃🏽 i see you guys enjoy the outdoors, food, coffee, beer. So maybe showing your favorite of those places would be cool. I enjoy all of those things.

I think you guys are interesting people. Even without van life i think you’re still interesting people. I enjoy watching your personalities and enjoy the way you guys edit your videos. Im sure you guys have a lot to offer outside of van life. Being you is a lot to offer.
