Watch Designer Give Small NYC Apartment a BIG Makeover On a $100 Budget
My name is Daniel. I’m from New York City and I’m in desperate need of an apartment refresh. Sometimes it is hard to know what to do with a small space. I’m not really always sure what to do with my furniture. I have a lot of blank walls. I have a lot of basic furniture. It’s a bit boring my apartment. I’m 32. I’m single. I don’t really think about this stuff. I’m not a design guy. I could really use some help. Hi guys. I’m Lauren Mack interior designer and life stylist. Let me see this place. Oh wow. It’s tiny. It is. Today I’m at Daniel’s apartment and I’ve got $100 to give this place a much needed makeover and a little style. Okay so everything looks pretty boxey like it’s all just from a box. Like nothing has any character. There’s no appeal. Tell me what would you like to see in this space? I like the feeling of being in an apartment and feeling at home. Okay you called the right girl. I’m gonna make this space beautiful for you. Sounds great. First thing’s first these books gotta go. Daniel’s apartment has no color and no character so today I’m gonna give him a little bit of both. The quickest easiest and cheapest way to change a room is with a splash of color. I picked a deep shade of green to paint Daniel’s room because it’s fly and sophisticated. A gallon of paint like this is gonna cost you about 25 bucks. That means you change your space for little to nothing. Here’s a great way to save money on your window treatments. Consider making your own custom ones. I got these curtains of $10 a pair and I spray painted a custom design on it. Super easy and super cheque. Here’s a great tip to update an old appliance for pennies on the dollar. Stainless steel sticky paper. Prep the surface by scraping off all the old stickers and stick it right on. It’s gonna give it a modern fresh look. Ha that looks amazing. It doesn’t cost very much money. I’m gonna give him an accent wall and create a focal point by using fabric as a headboard. This fabric was only $3.99 a yard and I bought eight yards. This is a super easy way to instantly overhaul a space. A nice dark paint color on the back of this bookshelf is gonna let all of his books pop and make the back of this bookcase recede. Organizing your books by color is a designer secret. It makes the room look instantly sophisticated and pulled together and it doesn’t cost you any money. This $100 makeover of Daniel’s apartment is going great. I’m super excited about the fabric wall. It’s adding a total punch in the room and the accent wall was just the perfect touch behind the sofa. I know it’s old school but bargain shopping online absolutely works. Don’t get too caught up on quality because this is not permanent bedding. They’re great for the seasons and it’s a great way to give your bedroom a facelift. Find something that’s affordable and awesome. I’m so excited to show Daniel his new space because his apartment has personality now. Oh my God. That’s awesome. You like it? Yeah it’s great. Rearranged your furniture so you have some more room here now. This is amazing. This is not what I expected at all. You like it? I love it. Thanks so much. Of course. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to have a stylish home. You just have to think creatively and think outside of the box. If you put things in your online shopping cart the companies will actually send you discount codes if you don’t buy it for like a couple of days. So that’s a really great way. It gets cheaper. It gets cheaper and cheaper so keep your eyes open for that kinda stuff. Paint is such a really affordable way to change your spaces instantly and it doesn’t cost much. We’re gonna make a wood block. What I love about this pattern is it’s so cool. You can really customize and do whatever you wanna do. The first step is getting some fabric with some texture. This is just. A bumpy piece of fabric. Yeah. Staple the fabric on. Kinda figure out a way to get it up there. You dip it in the paint and then take it off. Removing the excess is really the key there. So that your texture can come through. Exactly. Gotcha. Absolutely not I’m gonna let you do the pattern. One of the ways that I did it was I set I drew some lines on the wall with a pencil and then just nice and easy. Go ahead. Rock it. Make sure you get all the pressure on all sides. Ta da. Well mine’s more of a blob but I am a beginner. You’re a beginner. So that’s one really easy affordable way you can do this. You guys it’s just paint. If you mess up you can paint over it. That’s the greatest thing. Let me show you another. Okay cool. If you’ve got an old piece of furniture that’s in your house and you’re thinking I’m just gonna throw it away don’t to that. A nice quick coat of paint is a great way to instantly give it a face lift and then I love the idea of using thumbtacks which are super affordable. You can get a box of 100 thumbtacks for like a dollar. Exactly. I get me needle nose pliers just so I don’t have to mess up my nails because that’s important to me y’all. (laughter) I love that she can do this and rock those nails at the same time. Honey I get my inspiration from Dolly. Dolly Parton. I love Dolly. She is everything. She is everything. She is everything. Isn’t she great? She’s amazing. Let me turn this. And I know Dolly would approve of a nice studded table like this. Look at that. So beautiful.
