Tiny apartment trend hits Milwaukee

SURPRISE YOU. BEN: IT’S MILWAUKEE’S BUSTLING NORTH END. JUST NORTH ALONG THE RIVER, NEW LIFE FOR THE OLD TANNERY ROW. EVEN WITH ALL THE ACTION, RONEN MONOSOV’S WALK TO HIS NEW APARTMENT IS A LONELY ONE. HE’S THE FIRST ONE TO MOVE IN AT WATER STREET’S NEW RHYTHM APARTMENT COMPLEX.>>SO FAR, — FOR ONE PERSON, IT’S IDEAL. AND THE LOCATION ITSELF, YOU CAN’T BEAT IT, RIGHT? BEN: LOCATION IS BIG, BECAUSE THESE APARTMENTS ARE NOT.>>I WAS VERY HESITANT. BEN: RHYTHM SPECIALIZES IN SOME OF MILWAUKEE’S FIRST MICRO-UNITS.>>THE KITCHENS FEATURE GRANITE COUNTERTOPS. BEN: THE DISHWASHER IS SMALLER. >>YOU FIND OUT A PIZZA BOX DOESN’T FIT IN THERE, SO THAT’S IMPORTANT. >>WE’VE GOT STAINLESS STEEL APPLIANCES. BEN: AND YOUR BED, IS ALSO YOUR DINNER TABLE. >>I MEAN, I MAKE MY BED EVERY MORNING NOW, BECAUSE OTHERWISE IT DOESN’T FIT. YOU HAVE TO TUCK IT IN. BEN: ALL OF THIS FITS INSIDE MONOSOV’S 405 SQUARE FOOT STUDIO.>>AS FAR AS SQUARE FOOTAGE, SOUNDS AWFUL. WHERE AM I SUPPOSED TO GO? AM I JUST GOING TO BUMP INTO EVERYTHING IN MY WAY? BEN: MONOSOV IS YOUNG, LIVES BY HIMSELF, AND WORKS DOWNTOWN. FOR A SMALL APARTMENT, HE PAYS $1175 A MONTH. MADISON-BASED APARTMENT SEARCH FIRM ABODO REPORTS THE AVERAGE ONE BEDROOM IN MILWAUKEE RENTS FOR ABOUT $800 A MONTH.>>THERE IS A NATIONAL TREND OF PEOPLE LIVING IN SMALLER SPACES. BEN: RHYTHM’S DEVELOPERS ARGUE THEIR PRICE IS CHEAP IN THIS NEIGHBORHOOD. I GUESS LOOKING AT THIS NEIGHBORHOOD, IS $1175 A FAIR PRICE?>>YEAH, SO $1175 IN NEW CONSTRUCTION IN THIS NEIGHBORHOOD DOESN’T CURRENTLY EXIST. BEN: AND IT’S A NEIGHBORHOOD FILLING UP FAST. RHYTHM’S DEVELOPERS HAVE PLANS FOR EVEN MORE BUILDINGS IN THE NORTH END, AND THEY AREN’T THE ONLY ONES. BEN: RHYTHM IS JUST ONE OF A COUPLE OF APARTMENT BUILDINGS GOING UP IN THIS NEIGHBORHOOD. THIS ONE IS JUST A COUPLE OF BLOCKS AWAY. THE QUESTION IS, HOW MUCH LONGER CAN COMPANIES KEEP BUILDING HERE IN MILWAUKEE? >>MY CONCERN IS, DOES IT AFFECT OTHER NEIGHBORHOODS? BEN: CAROLYN ESSWEIN TEACHES URBAN PLANNING AT UWM. SHE SAYS THE BUILDING BOOM COULD GIVE YOUNG PEOPLE MORE OPTIONS TO LIVE DOWNTOWN IN SMALL SPACES.>>IT IS ACTUALLY A LITTLE SMALL FOR OUR MARKET. I DON’T THINK PEOPLE ARE READY FOR THAT, BUT I THINK 400 TO 500 SQUARE FEET, THEY’RE READY FOR THAT. AS LONG AS IT HAS GOOD MATERIALS, GOOD QUALITY. >>I’M NOT A SUPER ORGANIZED PERSON, SO IT HELPS YOU, I GUESS. IT FORCES YOU TO BE ORGANIZED. BEN: MONOSOV LIKES HIS NEW PLACE, AND THIS WON’T BE THE ONLY BUILDING IN TOWN SPECIALIZING IN SMALL. APARTMENTS PLANNED IN THE NEW BUCKS ARENA DISTRICT WILL ALSO
