Studio apartment tour of updates and ideas – IKEA HACK Room divider update (February 2019)

how’s it going guys Mark from Manchester Design Studio here, today in this video I’m going to be giving you an update on
the studio apartment and show you
what’s been done, I’ll also show you what I’ve
been planning and what’s still left to do as you can see in the background there’s
some lights hanging with bulbs missing so there are a lot of finishing touches
that are left to do in the apartment but my main focus will be on giving you an
update on the IKEA hack room divider which is next to me here
it’s still going strong which is great but it’s been finished which is
exciting and I hope that you like how it’s been finished let me know your
feedback in the comments below I’d also like to thank you all who have come to
my channel you may have subscribed or engage with the videos in any way I
really appreciate it the videos got way more attention than I originally
anticipated so it’s been a very humbling experience and it’s great to see people
that like it and also on the other side people that don’t because I’m new to
YouTube I’m new to applying my design thinking to interior design so I’d like
to just say thank you and I hope to keep bringing you some great content… so let’s
get into it Since the last video there’s been a few
things that have changed in the apartment the main one being in the
kitchen which I’m really looking forward to showing you and the rest have been a
case of trying to get rid of these blank white walls and start to bring some
personality into the apartment, as you can see that is still a battle I’m
fighting, just as and when I get the time and money but just small torches that
bring some additional personality into the space for the room divider I chose
to keep the wood exposed and stain it with a Danish oil finish but add this
Manchester design studio twist of a paint job to the frame
I think this helps it stand out but blend in if that makes sense
the white walls and white ceilings the the white comes from the left and from
the top and the wood really stands out and achieves this modern / industrial
vibe that I’m trying to bring into the apartment so overall I’m really happy
with the way it’s turned out to finish off the divider I’ve used Philips hue light strips which wrap all the way around from the living area to the
sleeping area these are actually connected to my Amazon echo dots so can be completely controlled by my voice or by the remote that came with the lights
and their hue apps got a really cool bit of functionality that can tell when I’m
nearby and they’ll turn on whenever I’m in a
certain radius of the hub. overall I’m really happy with the divider and how these lights sort of finish the divider they really give it this futuristic
modern look for the storage space in a sleeping area
I didn’t want this just to become a dumping ground for excess storage that
I’ve got so I decided to use it functionally for my ironing so currently
that’s where my ironing board lives it’s just a trial at the moment see how it
goes but I think it might stay permanently because it’s a good excuse
to open up the bed keep whatever’s under there organized and at the same time
save some space the lighting that you can see that turns on when they open the bed is completely automatic and was a really cheap Amazon buy I’ll leave a
link to those in the description below but literally all they are is an LED
strip that you stick where you want and then a rechargeable sensor that you just
charge up and it magnetically sticks where you want I’m going to complete the
wardrobe with floor to ceiling mirrored doors installing the Wardrobe in the place I
have it created this long white column so because there was so much white in a
studio apartment already I decided to use this concrete self-adhesive vinyl
that was actually really affordable and make a feature of the column this
really plays into the whole industrial vibe that I’m trying to achieve in the
apartment and I’ve used it in the corner of the room as well if you’ve watched my
previous videos you would have seen that there was mirrors floor-to-ceiling in
that corner unfortunately they fell down but I’m
going to add a more secure one-piece mirror in this corner so it will
actually reflect the vinyl in a way that makes it look like a full concrete
column what I’m really excited to show you guys
is this kitchen cabinet that I’ve been building it’s been built to fill the
recess that was caused by the Wardrobe and the original partition wall if you
follow me on instagram you may have seen a couple of prototype images that have
been posted, now the final structure is complete and painted there’s just a
lot of finishing touches that needs to be done on the inside so a couple more
shelves for glasses for the mini bar at the top, the legs for the fold down
section needs to be painted and probably a couple of magnetic knife racks will go
in the middle section just to make it a workstation with accessible things
nearby but ultimately it’s a great addition to the kitchen because it gives
me that little bit of counter area that I need where can potentially serve
drinks or do a little bit more when the rest of the kitchen is a bit too
cluttered in the middle section of the cabinet I’ve used vinyl again this time a marble effect as far as vinyl goes it was more on the expensive side but
comparing it to other marble vinyls this one really reflects the true style of
the marble I would have chose if I was to go for the real thing in a kitchen
and again for this and all the products I use I’ll leave links in their
description below I think what I’ll also do is part of this cabinet projects is
do a breakaway video which will fully break down how it was constructed and
how it works if you’re interested in seeing that let me know in the comments
below also in the kitchen I’ve bought this stainless steel wall rack from IKEA
the great thing about this is as its stainless steel it complements the rest
of the kitchen it also gives me the chance to raise the microwave up off the countertop this shoe racks from IKEA it fits perfectly into the space between the door and the wall the door misses it by millimeters so
it’s as if it’s been custom-built for the space the problem is, is it overhangs
slightly in terms of width it’s a bit wider than the wall that it sits on so
I’ve got a solution for that that I’m working on that I’ll brings you in the
later video on the wall opposite the shoe cabinet I’m going to use this space
to hang coats I’ve not decided yet whether I’m going to have these coat
hangers exposed or whether I can conceal them in some way in a cabinet so guys as you can see by the walls with
the tape there’s a lot of finishing touches to do and I’ve got a few DIY
jobs that are yet to be done in future hope to bring your videos on a more
consistent basis and I’m considering doing video diaries where as I’m doing a
project I’ll document it and I’ll upload in the same day I think I’ve been too
caught up in the quality of the video and trying to make it perfect but what
I’ll do is try and get some content out there so you can see in real time how
this studio apartments coming along again thank you for all the engagement
in the videos I’ve posted so far I hope to keep growing as a youtuber and as a
design business and I appreciate you guys being with me from the start

Really enjoyed this. It makes a great change to see someone who can actually design an interior, rather than just loading up with accessories.
Nice job.

Good job – I have renovated many projects over the years and Ikea is my number one go to – especially for kitchens and bathrooms. I love how you've made the most of your tiny space – people think they need soooooo much room but what they really need is to learn how to utilise the space they have without making it feel cluttered – plus people have sooooo much stuff which they think they need….

I have a small case claustrophobia, yet I have to say that I can totally see myself living here. The flow of the place is so smooth it does not feel compacted. This is very very well designed, and it looks gorgeous?. You have done an amazing job !!!??. I am hooked now to see what you will be doing next. Beautifully done ??????????

Came upon this by accident but I'm curious to see the finish so I'll subscribe. Like what you've done with the place. I think you could do with some mirrors in the bathroom you know to help when your brushing your teeth etc, you can get some really cheap stick on ones from IKEA

Absolutely brilliant job! One can see how much thought and planning had gone into every miniscule detail. Covering the overhang from the closet with cement look-a-like is genius; it truly has an appearance of an architectual column. Well done, I'm looking forward to any future videos.

If you could design a bookcase/shelving feature that could move inward against your bedroom wall, or hinged on some way to open outward or inward (whichever works best) like a regular door, and/ on some type of track system, you could maximize storage/display for glasswares, books, etc. To keep it flush with the existing glass doors, recess it accordingly. The concrete and black color theme would accent it beautifully. Just food for thought.
