Santa Monica Homeless Man Has a Masters Degree but Can’t Find Work to Afford Rent.

– [Host] Melvin? – Yes. – [Host] We’re here in Los Angeles. You’re homeless, livin’ in your car. Tell me about it. – Well, yeah, that’s what’s happening. I’m actually homeless. I’m livin’ in my car. Formerly, I used to
sleep on this curb here at the cemetery, and yeah,
it sucks, to say the least. I don’t really know what else to tell you. It’s just been rough out here. It’s been going on for a very long time. It just seems like, sometimes I feel like it’s never gonna end, but
then I try to stay hopeful. – [Host] Now, you have a masters degree in stuff I can’t even pronounce. – Yeah, well- – [Host] Go ahead. – Yeah I do, it’s a masters in something called molecular and nanotechnology. It was granted in 2014 from
Louisiana Tech University, I love that place. In my alma
mater, I did research there, I did track and field,
undergrad, did cheerleading in graduate school. But, you know for some reason I guess it just didn’t translate in Los Angeles or even outside of Los Angeles for like working
opportunities and like jobs in the field of where I
want and I got the degree. And so I ended up, basically
doing jobs online, app jobs, like delivery for Postmates. Basically, you bring in
food to peoples homes or wherever they ask
for it through the app. Well, it wasn’t paying very much. It was wearing down my
car, which is super old, it was a 2002 Buick LeSabre. Pretty big car, it was
like 12 miles to the gallon and I was using that
to do those deliveries. And you know, I was barely able to put gas in the car with what I was making. – [Host] You’re college
educated, masters degree, and you can’t find work. – No, I’ve applied for
literally over a thousand jobs and that’s no exaggeration. And some of those jobs,
at least 25% of them, I’ve applied to at least
twice or three times. I was just relentless with
the job application pursuit. I just decided to renew my
resume multiple times over, I consulted with other
professional people who are supposedly experts in resume building and coaching you through,
like interviews and stuff. And I changed my resume accordingly but it just never
materialized into any job, not even an interview. So I was never able to actually practice those interviewing skills I learned because no one actually
called me in for an interview. – [Host] Why do you think that is? – To be honest, and I hate to say this because I’m not like a victim person, I’m always just about
go get it, do yourself, I just feel like I’ve been
discriminated against. And for whatever reason that happened, people decided to not have a heart and like care about a person
who just wanted to help people. Because when you go get a
masters in something like molecular science biology
and nanotechnology, you don’t do it because
you just want to have that fancy name, you do
it because you actually have a passion for research
and for helping people. And no one seems to appreciate that because I feel like I could
actually help the world evolve with science and with medicine, if only given the chance to do so. And I feel like it’s not
as actually bad for me, as it is for the rest of the world, this kind of discrimination, because you know you’re
holding back someone who could just help the masses. You’re holding back
someone who actually cares, who has a passion for it. It doesn’t make any sense. – [Host] But you’re not stopping? – No, I’m determined I’m determined to get into medical school, to get off the streets, make a living doing
things that help people. So I channel all the anger I
have from living on the streets and sleeping on the ground and in my car into filmmaking recently. I just pulled out my cellphone
and started making films. I started with just vlogging
but then became very serious and I decided to turn it into a story. A story that I could use to reach people and I’m just gonna do more of that. – [Host] And you’re in
the right town for that and I’ll put a link
below in the description to your YouTube channel
or whatever you want for people to find you,
your resume whatever. – Thank you, I really appreciate it – [Host] Hopefully
somebody will click on this and say wow this is a smart,
young man and needs a chance. Tell me, how long you’ve been out here? – Officially 17 months,
going on 18 months and I’ve been homeless for about 14
months of that 17 months. – [Host] Now, you’ve contacted
all the service providers? – Every single service
that exist in the city, even going as far as the
mayor’s office in Santa Monica. And I contacted some
people there, I’m not gonna mention their names but I have
been in contact with them. I’ve used every single
resource that they’ve told me would work but for me it didn’t work. And I have no idea why. Even after hounding those
people multiple times, they just never got back to me, they never gave me a place to stay, they never helped me with a job and it really was almost disconcerting. I didn’t know what to think. I love Los Angeles and
there is never anything bad I will say about Los Angeles or any of the counties anywhere here. But, I was very disappointed. I was born in Los Angeles
and for me this is home. Even though, you know, I went
to school away from here, I came back because my whole
life this is where I belong. And also, I don’t have family. I was adopted and homeless
when I was young even. But coming back to Los Angeles, I expected to be able
to start my life here. To help people, to get
involved with the research, the university, the industry and just give myself to this
community in as big of a way as I possible could. But it just wasn’t accepted and, you know, I just don’t know why. All I know, is that I still
have something to give. And I’m gonna work and do as much as I can to improve myself so I can
finally give it because, you know, I’m here for everyone else, I’m not here for myself. – [Host] And so, what
was it like trying to get out of homelessness and
basically just getting dead-end referral after dead-end referral? – It’s like different stages to it. Like if you had to compare it
to different stages of grief or stages of death. I started out with just
complete and utter denial of what was happening. And I just couldn’t believe it. I was thinking, oh maybe next week or they just haven’t
seen my application yet. Or maybe next month or just keep applying. Or maybe I just have
a typo on that resume. And I just kept, you know, revising it and trying my best to stay hopeful. And then there was this bit of shame that started to creep in because you see all of your
other friends getting jobs. All of your friends that you knew, they didn’t even get a masters. They only got a bachelors and
they’re making six figures. And they’re living lives that, you know, I can’t imagine living
because I’ve never been there. And so that shame, you want
to hide it from your friends. You want to hide it from people you know because you don’t want people
you know that you’re in as desperate situation as you actually are. So that was what was happening with me. Until, I finally got to the
point where I accepted it. And that old part of me, that
was so attached to everything that happening just died. And then I was reborn
into the guy that accepted where I was. And I said, I’m gonna do
anything and everything to get myself out of this situation because sleeping on the street
has not been fun at all. Its been dangerous and its been one of the worst situations that ever
happen to me in my entire life. – [Host] Now, people just
assume a smart guy like you can either just get a job quickly or the homeless services
will help you get help. Or help you get a job or
help you get whatever, go into a shelter and
that’s not been the case. – No and I had all the same
things before I became homeless. I do feel like it’s worse
for some people than others. For whatever reason, there’s
a lot of factors to consider, but for me, I’m just at
the bottom of the bottom. No one even thinks about
giving me a shelter or a home. Or whenever I go through
those services and sign up, I get no preference. I don’t even get a call
back, even after I’ve called them back multiple
times or show up. That’s the thing I try to do. I’ll spend time and whatever
money I can get together, to get a bus across town that
goes an hour and a half away so that I can contact
these homeless shelters, these services that I’ve reached out to. To try and keep them, like
keep me in their thoughts and it just doesn’t help. And so, those assumptions are
not valid and they’re baseless because you really don’t
know what it’s like, until you’ve been out here
and this happens to you. – [Host] Now this isn’t
your first time homeless because you had a rough upbringing? – Yes, dad went to prison when I was two. Mom became a seriously strung-out
drug addict early in life and by the age of 12 she was
completely incapacitated, basically and she wasn’t
able to support me. Dropped me and my younger
sister off at a fire station, where we stayed for like
a night until they took us to a shelter for kids. We stayed there for about three weeks. No one in our family took us in on my mom’s side of the
family until my aunt did. And they lived in a different state. So, they came and got
me and my younger sister and we moved to Louisiana. And all through high
school I live with them, up until my senior year when
they decided to kick me out because they were these super
devout Jehovah’s Witnesses. And they said, oh if I’m
not going to get baptized and become, officially
a Jehovah’s Witness, I can’t live there anymore. I was a good kid, I never
hung out with anyone from my school because I wasn’t allowed. I didn’t do any drugs, nothing. I just simply went to
school, played basketball and studied the bible, like three or four times a week with them. But since I didn’t get baptized
it just wasn’t good enough. So I was homeless all
throughout high school, my senior year. I lived in a Salvation
Army until I graduated. And then, I just went to
college and stayed there. – [Host] Tell us about, so you’ve got one documentary in the can? – Yes, I do. It’s called There’s No
Crying in Los Aneles. It was inspired by, so while
I was homeless, I was so angry and I had no one to talk to.
I don’t have any friends. The few, one or two, friends I did have, have just abandoned me. And for no reason, I never
borrowed money or anything. They just abandoned me
for whatever reason. And they’re just out of my life now. But I was so lonely and
I had so much to say. So I just wrote it down, I
wrote it into like a book. Basically, just a series
of essays called it There’s No Crying in Los Angeles. I was making these
little vlogs on my phone and someone reached
out to me from Germany. His name was Julian, he came here and he decided to shoot a video of me. And like, we had no idea
what we were going to do. So, I just quickly
designed a story board of what was going on in my life. And I just, basically reenacted everything that was happening. And mind you, at the time, I was literally still
sleeping on the street. And we made a documentary that’s been accepted into one
film festival so far, and we’re expecting more. The only issue is submitting
to more film festivals because it cost money
and I just don’t have it. But yeah, so I just kind of ran with that. And now, we’re making more. We made another documentary
and it’s going to be edited and produced soon. And short films and just
all manner of media. We’re trying to do it because
I’ve found I have a talent. I just want to do it,
mostly it’s to reach people. It’s to help people, I
have message behind it. It’s not just for entertainment, it’s not just so that
people can see my face. It’s so they can hear
the message behind it. – [Host] And you didn’t
really plan to be a filmmaker. You was just frustrated
with this homeless thing, not being able to get a job
and started being creative. – Exactly. Honestly, it was out of the creativity, arose out of desperation. And you know, I’m never one to give up and I go 100% with whatever it is I do. The only thing I had
available to me was a phone. And so I used it, I picked it
up and just started filming. And that led to There’s
No Crying in Los Angeles and whatever else is next. And I’m gonna try to be the
best I can at this filmmaking thing right now because
this is what I have. And I’m not being given the
opportunity to work at a big pharmaceutical company or biotech company. Which is where my major is, where I have the degrees
for it, research experience. So, I’m gonna go and do what I can and not complain or worry about the things I don’t have any control over. – [Host] If you had three
wishes, what would they be? – I wish that people
would see my story and understand why I made it and understand the message behind it. I hope that it reaches them. The other wish would be
for more people like me, to be able to rise out
of situations like this and accomplish their dreams. So that they can go out and help people because that’s the ultimate goal anyway. My third wish would be that Los Angles can improve as a city. And not just the homelessness out there but other things that
I see that are wrong. And I want to be able to
help with that, if I could. And so those are my three wishes. – [Host] I say always,
once we end homelessness, we gotta do something about the traffic. – Exactly. – [Host] Once we end homelessness. Homelessness first, then the traffic. Thank you very much for talking to me. – You’re welcome. Thank you so much for talking to me and allowing me to like do this thing. I hope that some people see
it and it resonates with them.

Wow this is law of attraction at its best in my opinion this man was basically homeless as a child abandoned by his crackhead parents then abandoned again by his aunt in 12 th grade he's obviously constantly thinking about it….what you think about most you create. I just can't understand it any other way because I myself barely made it out of high school and my husband hell never even graduated from high school are living great… I know lots of ppl making over 6 figures that never stepped on a college campus… change your thoughts change your life…and I did something he needs to which was get the hell out of a negative environment. You got a car move…and start thinking only positive thoughts write yourself a new life literally.

Brother Melvin, I am prayful that u connect with ur almater. Perhaps u can connect with them to become an adjunct professor. Ppl with masters degrees can teach others. Pls connect with ur locate social service office and a designated social worker. Ask ur social worker to sign u up for group therapy which is an excellent way to build on ur strengths & to see weaknesses that may be hindering u. Some ppl depending on the state and county can possible receive mail thru their social service agency or a postal service. If u ask the probability is u will get a yes. Not everyone on this plant is evil. U may have to relocate as well. A Go fund me account can get u a bus or plane ticket. I pray that the Lord will help u to recreate ur possibility to ways to create income . Do not quit. Ppl working in these agencies must do their job. Grants r being paid for this particular reason. Grants r out there for u as well not just these ppl who come from across the seas who cannot sometimes speak English. Also try ur locate libraries to use the internet service. Your story can be told in writing a book. It is obvious those looking at ur story here r interested. The documentary is an excellent way in tapping into ur untapped creativity. Continue to use ur education to create outside the norms. The Lord may not want u to work in the wicked pharma industry but to soar into an avenger of truth. Ur spirit is purer than than.

Why LA? Seems like those jobs are in Seattle or Boston. Why LA? Why choose one of the higher-priced cities in the country?

Doesn't research typically require a PhD? Can you get back into a school and start a PhD program and at least start your research and make a name for yourself?

How was your grades? Is that holding you back? Is there not ANYTHING you can do that would be advantageous to you? Competition is tough out here…

Pretty fucking sad….it's crazy because I made the worst mistake of my life , I left California because rent was so high I decided to go to the South been at my job for 6 years and now im in the South thinking I can go here with my kids and get something cheaper but I've been here almost a year and can't find a job , I've been very depressed , I'm constantly filling out job after job application, people told me don't go out to the South there are no jobs but for some reason I thought I would be able to find one because of my background no gaps in my work history but still can't find decent work ….I'm just a few inches away from living on the street ….this is very sad , I can see this happening to people who don't want to work but someone who desperately want to work it's heartbreaking…….I'm to the point where I have given up n at times want to end my life…my one wish is too hit the lottery I would build buildings strictly for the homeless, this should be happening in America….

What are his degree majors? And what is his experience in those fields? Many people go to college and get degrees in low demand or low compensation fields. That being said. If he wants to get out poverty and homelessness as quickly as possible. He’s going to have to get into some type of retail sales. Period. I.e. cars, furniture, or electronic consumer goods. With the right business and commission plan. He could be back on his feet within a year. If he works hard.

The job market is saturated with bachelors and even masters degrees and you need to separate yourself from the crowd by having experience and certifications.

Have you thought of maybe joining the military? You could get a commission as an officer and go up the rung fast. Starting cost $0. Just need dedication, but you already got that. You're intelligent and seem physically fit. Just get past basic. If I was in your shoe's I would be running to the nearest Navy recruiter office. As a side note, they want to create a Space military branch and your education in that branch is going to be needed for sure. If military is not your cup of tea, then go apply for a gov job. FBI, CIA, DEA, ATF, US marshals hell any alphabet letter agency would hire you. Field investigator, forensics lab.

It is just ridiculous the way that they treat Melvin. With a master's degree in Molecular Science, he deserves better than that. Maybe he can become a high school teach or something.

Why did he leave Louisiana? He could have definitely earned a liveable wage here…… Maybe not in the exact position he wants, but he could definitely found a job that paid a liveable wage.

I looked into NANO TECHNOLOGY years ago and damn it is high quality science. This new science has discovered how to remove tattoos using NANO with creams! There are two companies that are working on it right now in Canada – this guy should look into them

Wow, and that was supposed to be a hot career track too. I can relate. I’m only a few credits and a thesis from a master’s and im still surviving the way I did as a teenager, on the streets.

California is a failing state the Democrats killed it. Too much regulation and illegal immigrants. Rich people and hollywood drove the costs up. It's for billionaires not working stiffs unfortunately!

I seen on CNN that a man was fired from his job and he went on the streets and held a card board sign with copies of his resume and gave it out to alot of people that wanted it and someone helped him and he got on LinkedIn and got alot of offers and he said he wanted to help others that was in his situation.maybe you should go to your local Media news and hand out your resumes after printing it out.

@2:40 and THAT'S what he needs to include in his motivation letter when he sends in his CV. He doesn't need to be going to medical school getting himself farther in debt unless he can afford it (according to his go fund me he is $200K in SL debt). Also it's nice that he wants to stay in LA for sentimental reasons, however as my teacher always told us, there are many roads that lead to Rome, he might have to leave to get employed somewhere else (just get employed) and go back at a later point in time.

I watch alot of these and I know what I'm going to say isn't the right answer and not just that easy but most of these people seem like they would be easily successful in middle America, get out of the New Yorks and the LA's there are so many people in those cities that it just comes down to who you know. All the good jobs there are takin and they already know who the position will be replaced with. There is room for you in middle America where credentials still trump popularity.

Melvin I can help you. I don't know how to contact you. I was in your situation and I got a grant to be a truck driver. I went to truck driving school paid for by my state through a grant program for adults who can't get work in their field. I am working now in company training for a month and receiving $800 per week and then in September my boyfriend and I are going to drive team and make $1500 each a week starting out. You can also live out of your truck in the sleeper. This is something you can do for money until your real career and passion opens the door for you. If you find a partner to drive with you those jobs are in high demand and pay more. Go to your local county job force for the grant. If we can talk I can help you through the process and get a job. I wish I did this a year ago. Its very important that you get a job making money because the economy is going to get really in 2020 and then worse. The homeless will be the first to get cut off from shelter and food programs. God bless you! Try to surround yourself with successful people and follow their thinking and ways they do things. Life is ruff. I think I read somewhere that even Donald trump was homeless at some point and living out of his car. Sucsessful people always bounce back because its the way they think and believe in themselves.
