Residents Of Oakland Apartment Fire Displaced

THERE, A MIRACLE THAT NOBODY GOT KILLED OR HURT. IN MILLVALE, CHRIS HOFFMAN, KDKA NEWS. A LARGE APARTMENT BUILDING IN THE CITY’S UPTOWN SECTION HAS NOW BEEN CONDEMNED. THE BUILDING CAUGHT FIRE YESTERDAY LEAVING MORE THAN 70 PEOPLE WITHOUT A HOME. SOME ARE STAYING AT A TEMPORARY SHELTER IN THE DAY THAT EL LAWRENCE CONVENTION CENTER. PAM SURANO IS LIVE WITH MORE ON WHY AND WHY THEY ARE WORRIED THAT NO ONE ELSE IS GOING TO HELP THEM. PAM? Reporter: KIM, THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THAT THE CONVENTION CENTER HAS SERVED AS EMERGENCY SHELTER FOR VICTIMS IN A FIRE IN THE CITY. THERE ARE 28 PEOPLE HERE TONIGHT AT THE CONVENTION CENTER. TEN OF THEM ARE CHILDREN AND THEY ARE WONDERING WHERE THEY WILL GO FROM HERE AND SOME OF THEM ARE BLAMING THE BUILDING’S MANAGEMENT. AFTER MORE THAN 24 HOURS OF TEMPORARY SHELTER, THEY SAY THEY FEEL ABANDONED AND WORRIED. AND INSIDE THE APARTMENTS ARE HOMELESS. AND A LARGER OLDER STRUCTURE. RIGHT NOW THE DAVID L. LAWRENCE CONVENTION CENTER IS SERVING AS SHELTER FOR MANY RESIDENTS. AND IT IS NOT THE OPTIMAL PLACE, BUT IT WILL SERVE ITS PURPOSE IF WE HAVE A BIG NUMBER OF PEOPLE. 28 PEOPLE INCLUDING 10 CHILDREN ARE STAYING HERE AT THE CONVENTION CENTER. WHAT THEY’RE SAYING IS WHEN WE COULD GO HOME MOM AND DAD AND WE HAVE NO ANSWERS FOR THEM. PROVIDING FOOD, CLOTHING, DIAPERS, AND CRISIS SERVICES HERE. BASICALLY THE FIRST 48 TO 72 HOURS. AND WHILE THEY ARE THANKFUL THAT IT HAS BEEN TOUGH. AND THEY ARE DOING AS MUCH AS THEY CAN DO, BUT WE’RE TRYING OUR BEST, BATHING IN THE BEST ROOMS AND THE SINKS. SLEEPING ON COTS WITH NO IDEA ON WHERE THEY WILL SLEEP NEXT. AND THIS IS JUST AMAZING HOW SOMETHING COULD CHANGE FROM HAVING THE STABLE LIVING CONDITION TO WHERE EVERYTHING WILL BE GONE. IT’S THE OWNER AND THE MANAGER OF THE HOUSING BUILDING AND THEY SAY THEY HAVE NOT HEARD FROM THEM AFTER THE FIRE. THEY ALSO DIDN’T GET THE HELP THAT THEY NEEDED BEFORE. AND THAT IT WILL BE THE IGNORANCE OF SAYING I DON’T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING, ALL I HAVE TO DO IS TO PUT A BAND-AID ON IT. IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT, GET OUT. AND NOW MANY TOLD US THEY PUT IN MAINTENANCE REQUESTS OVER THE LAST TWO YEARS. WE’VE REACHED OUT TONIGHT, BUT DID NOT HEAR BACK FROM THEM. WE WERE TOLD THEY WOULD NOT GET BACK TO US UNTIL MONDAY AND ALSO RESIDENTS, THEY WOULD LIKE SOME HELP FROM THE CITY THIS EVENING.
