Preparing to Sell Your Home: Staying Clean While Moving! (Clean My Space)

Moving is something we all have to do at
some point and while it can be stressful, if you manage it effectively, it’ll be a
smooth transition from wherever you are to wherever you’re going. Many of you have
asked me to put together different moving videos. From how to prepare for a move, how to pack, how to unpack, how to organize. So many requests and I’ve wanted
to answer them for so long because I have so much to say on the topic. The issue is, I wasn’t moving. So
fortunately, our producer, Lucas, he just sold this condo and we decided as a team,
that we’re going to share his journey of moving with all of y’all. This video we’re
going to talk about how to prepare your space for a move. So, before you even
think about selling, things that you need to do around the house. We’re going to try
and keep these moving videos fairly brief but there is so much to say on the topic.
So, we’ve put all the gory details up on our website, CleanMySpace.com. So you can be sure to check that out. But
right now, let’s talk about 10 ways to prepare your space for a move. Let’s go.
Decluttering, the first thing you want to do when you’re preparing your space to
sell is to get rid of as much excess stuff as possible, so that you can make your
space look as large as possible. After all, that’s what people are going to be
most interested in. So go through your home and remove
anything that is not absolutely necessary. From decor items, books, DVDs and anything
else lying around that isn’t absolutely pertinent. Cleaning your windows. Natural
light is a huge selling feature of any space. And let’s face it, no one likes
looking out dirty windows. So, if you want your perspective buyers to feel like
they’re walking into a space with tons of natural light, you better make sure those
windows are clean. Where possible, you want to make sure that
you can get your exterior windows clean and obviously your interior ones as well.
Remember those tracks and your window coverings. And if you’re looking for
videos on how to clean your windows, different recipes and techniques and what
tools and products to use, I’ll link all of that down below for you. Because of
course, we have videos on it. Depersonalize, the next step is going to
be challenging but it is so important when it comes to making a sale. Your job here
is to neutralize your space. You want to take out anything that’s personal,
superstitious, religious. Any photographs or knick-knacks or cards or
anything personal. Because your job here is to turn your home
back into a house. You have to help people themselves in your space. Not you in your
space and remember, all of the things that you’re taking out, they’re going to go to
your new home. So, you can set it up and feel right back at home, once
you get there. Walls, baseboards, and vents. This is
where attention to detail can really pay off. Fixing up little marks or scuffs on
your wall is a great way to make your space look clean. Also, remember to clean
the light switch plates and get rid of any of those marks on there. Baseboards are
areas that are often forgotten but really important to keep clean. And finally, your
vents are also something that the pickiest buyers are going to look at. And if you
quickly vacuum them, you give them nothing to scoff at. Clean the kitchen. As I’ve said before,
the kitchen is the heart of the home and it is used as a barometer for how clean
the rest of your space is. So, having it clean is super important. You want
to make sure that all of your exterior surfaces are clean. So, that includes your
countertops, your sinks, your cupboard fronts, your door handles. All the
exterior appliance surfaces. You even want to make sure that the
exhaust filter about your oven is either cleaned or changed entirely. Now, we have
so many different videos about how to clean your kitchen and I will link all of
them below for you. So, you can get lost in a little kitchen cleaning Youtube
rabbit hole. Remove excess furniture. If you want a
great way to free up extra square footage without having to build an addition, all
you need to do is clear out any excess furniture. So, go through each space,
remove things that you though you needed but you really don’t. And just watch how
your room opens up. Remember, you put all this stuff in storage, you can bring it
into your new space. Or you might decide you don’t need it anymore. Deodorize your space. You may or may not
know this, but your home has a unique scent. And while you might not notice it,
other people will. And the last thing you want to do is turn someone off when they
walk in because your scent doesn’t jive with theirs. So, the first thing you can
do is open all of your windows and just let Mother Nature do her work. The next thing you can do is bring in some
nice, neutral, gentle scents into your home by using something like a nebulizer
with essential oils, a lamp berget or even a reed diffuser. We made this one and I’ll
link the video down below for you along with some other nice DIY scent projects. Clean your closets. Remember, almost any
potential buyer is going to be interested in how much closet space they might be
getting themselves into. So, it’s incumbent upon you, to make sure that your
closet has as little clutter as possible and looks as organized as possible. That’s
going to make it look bigger and more appealing. So take out anything that’s out of season
or anything that looks cluttered or sort of out of place. Put that into storage or
get rid of it altogether. Either way, your job is to make the closet look huge. Deep
clean your bathroom. If you want to make a prospective buyer feel right at home in a
flash, have a spotless bathroom. You want them to feel like they can take a
shower or sit on your toilet with absolutely nothing to worry about. So,
this means you got to roll up your sleeves and give your bathroom a good scrubbing.
Get your tub and tiles nice and soap scum free. As well as mold and mildew-free. You
can also consider changing out your shower curtain or your bathmat to make it look
extra clean. Give your toilet a nice thorough scrub and make sure your mirrors
and sinks are shiny and looking new. Clean your carpets. Since floors are such
a large part of a space, making sure that they look perfectly clean is really
important. But if you have carpets, it’s sort of a next level situation because
carpets cling on to odors and stains. So, if you have kids or pets, you don’t want
to give any perspective buyers reasons to turn their nose up or raise an eyebrow. That means, make sure that your carpets
are clean, stain-free and deodorized. And if you can’t get this done yourself feel
free to bring in a profession. Remember, you don’t want to give buyers any reason
to try and lower a price. Whether you’re moving up, downsizing or moving out for
the first time, I hope that this video has helped you get prepared
for that very move. Remember, we’re following Lucas on his
journey from this condo to the new one. So we’ll be getting lots of exciting
moving content out for you over the next little while. But in the meantime, make
sure you let me know your moving questions down below and that way we can incorporate
them into upcoming videos. If you want to see what I’m up to during the week, aside
from cleaning things. You can find me on Instagram. I’m
@MELISSAMAKER. The guy who packed our car up this morning with camera gear while I
did my hair and makeup, he is @THECHADREYNOLDS and together we are
@CLEANMYSPACE. There’s a button down there that lets me know you care, so click it if
you liked this video. And click this button right here to subscribe and begin
your journey to a cleaner life. Thanks so much for watching and we’ll
see you next time. Now, it’s that special time in the video,
the end of the video, where I get to throw you to a couple of other videos I think
you’re going to love. And the first one has to do with cleaning your oven overhead
exhaust filter. Something I talked about in this video and something that we
definitely forget to do. Even if you’re not moving it’s a good thing to take on.
And the next one is to make your own reed diffuser. It is a fun project and it definitely
yields exciting results. Thanks guys and I’ll see you next week

Exhausted just watching the video and thinking about cleaning. Ha! I'm not moving but toying with the idea of getting my place to look the best it can be. I always thought it was weird that you live with nicks on the walls, clutter, little repairs that need done but once you want someone else to buy the house then suddenly, when you are leaving, you spot all these extra things to do that would have made your house nicer to live in.

Melissa, you have read my thoughts! Thank you so much for the video. I have several questions about moving. 1. Moving Co and movers. Your tips to chose the right Co. What we should looking for? 2. Packing process. When to start? What we can pack in advance? How to estimate how many boxes and other materials we need? Packing tips. 3. Move in home evaluation and cleaning. I have more details on this question. We plan to move to bigger home, it was maintained nicely, but the owners had a mature cat. We definitely want to eliminate this scent and prepare this home to move in (may be some painting job will be required). What is your recommendations on the process as we don't want to double pay, for example,  for carpet special treatment with enzymes and carpet cleaning, but then ended up with the full carpets replacement. What should be the first, what the next , etc  (how to plan the order of each step:  visual home evaluation, find the urine spots with special lamp, painting job, carpet cleaning job, move in cleaning).

We have sold two houses in the past four years — one went for listing price in Texas during the mortgage crisis when very few similar size houses in the neighborhood were selling and the one in Hawaii sold in three days well above list price when a bidding war broke out. After our renters moved out of a house, we hired a very good local contractor to refurbish each house: re-painted all walls and ceilings with neutral taupe/beige tones, installed high-end ceiling fans/light fixtures in bed rooms and living areas, replaced all door knobs and cabinet knobs with trendy brushed nickel ones, installed fancy blown glass pendant lights above breakfast bar, replaced all carpeting with Berber-type in darker taupe/beige tones to coordinate with wall paint, replaced all vinyl flooring in bathrooms and kitchens with higher quality industrial grade vinyl designed to mimic wood flooring, installed plantation shutters on all windows, did custom framing around every bathroom mirror, installed trendy styles of bathroom lighting fixtures and replaced all the kitchen appliances with trendy stainless steel versions. In one of the houses we coated the garage floor with speckled concrete paint and painted the garage walls so it could serve as a mild weather party room. Refurbishing cost about $40K per house and was recouped (way more than recouped for the Hawaii house) when the deals closed.  The bottom line is you have to spend money to make money selling a house and today's house buyers want turn-key perfection and the look of a brand new house because most don't have handyman skills to do simple upgrades or the design sense to choose the right colors and finishes.

This is a great video. Realtors out there take note and have your sellers watch this!
When I sold my house, I was lucky enough to have a place where I could send off half of all our stuff. Half of all closets, kitchen stuff, toys, books, even cleaning products. Always open the windows and if it's too cold, something on the stove to smell like baked pie or cookies! No stinky or cleaning product smells

Suggestion to help sellers: If you have a dining room (if not use kitchen) set the table for company, with flowers (alstroemeria's last the longest). It makes the potential buyer think about how they would entertain in your space.

Can you wash kitchen cloths with bath/face towels? Can you wash microfiber cloths with regular towels? At what temperature? So he said for me to learn everything I can to help him sell, and he wants me to help him stage the place when the weather warms up.

It's scary but exciting! I've never gotten to this point with any of my exes; home ownership. Any cohabitation was done as renters.

I saw in another video they suggested packing while you're decluttering, so if you have stuff you know you won't need while you're trying to sell your house, you can go ahead and pack them for moving.
