Planning commission rejects proposed 5-story apartment in Royal Oak

it’s a fifteen million dollar project near downtown Royal Oak but this proposed five-story apartment building drawing a lot of opposition right now Germont teri live at Main and catalpa and Germont was there a final vote on the project at tonight’s meeting yes entered the decision coming down late tonight the project is denied but it’s a big to be continued to figure out exactly what will be built here where I’m standing at the corner of Main the Cattell puts its an old run-down auto garage and gas station it’s been vacant for years yet if a developer gets his way this blighted corner and Royal Oak will transform into this you can’t help but fall in love with it is a lot better than what exists there today the developer Anthony guestimate came before the city asking to resolve the land from business to residential that would clear the way for five level 60 unit apartment complex the only problem he doesn’t plan to add parking for renters they’re certainly not going to invest 15 million dollars into this neighborhood if they don’t believe that parking can work the way we proposed it this proposal asked the city to utilize a city-owned lot nearby instead of building parking into the plan and that’s what brought out this crowd the reason he’s not building any parking is because he doesn’t want to pay the money this isn’t expanding on the growth this is a stopper one by one residents told the Commission it felt the complex with no proposed parking with hurt nearby businesses especially in what’s already limited parking in downtown Royal Oak among those vocal the owner and customers of jazzercize a nearby business if they absorb all the parking everybody else wrong an island of a parking lot will not be able to develop the property it will not be a trend it will stop the trend when it came time to vote the Commission was split will you come back or will you or you have to talk with your developers like Game of Thrones I guess we have to leave you in suspense on that one because we’re not sure ourselves so there you have it no clear word that this developer will make any changes in ad parkings to the structure of the apartment complex that he wants to build as for the residents they left tonight’s meeting believing that the city at least heard there CERN’s reporting live in Royal Oak tonight Germont Terry local 4
