NEVER TOO SMALL ep.12 29m2 Tiny Apartment Design – Itinerant Richmond

This apartment was built in the 60s, it consists of eight studio units. When we found this place it was an old
studio unit. The bait was in the living area we saw the potential to change it.
The first thing was to remove the kitchen out, and turn it into a proper one
bedroom. The idea was to create a hotel home hybrid. We wanted to create a
minimal clean luxe interiors to this space. So naturally I selected all timber floors Dutch plywood for the wall and
ceiling. This create a feeling of that you’re in a cabin space. For the kitchen
we decided to contrast the birch plywood with black metal countertops with
perforated screens. This is to enable you to see whats behind it and store all the
kitchen appliances, the cutlery, the fridge and a washer/dryer. We decided to create a custom-made light for the kitchen. During the nighttime you could
probably use it as a statement piece because this space is compact at 29 sqm
we need to find space to store all other things. So the idea was
to create a wall or joinery to hide all our items behind it. So we managed to put
in a laundry, we have pantry and we managed to put in a microwave we made
a conscious effort to make sure that the doors are hidden so it’s a push open
system to minimize the visual clutter to the space. For the bedrooms we decided to
raise the floor to house the services from the kitchen and we also decided to
put the bed on a plinth. Just to create a seamless transition on the space to make
it feel bigger and we decided to integrate the Wardrobe and the shelving
space above the bed maximize the space usage. We wanted to
create a generous ensuite space for users and the way to enforce it was to
use the gridded tiles from floor to ceiling. It gives you a perception of
that space is almost infinite. We keep the materials correlated to each other
in the space so you find that when we use black metal for the kitchen black
metal is actually used for the ensuite as well. The color palette that we choose
for this space is pretty simple it’s just dutch plywood with black metal and
white power and finally it’s just consistent throughout the space.

Architects are awesome…. but their ideas are not always practical. The small tiles in that bath has too much grout. A pain to clean!

From an architecture perspective. 29m2 It's not such "tiny" space nor considered "tiny". Most of the times that word has been used as an exageration in order to give it more contrast to the "great design" made in such space. I had traveled to different countries. In most countries 29m2 it's considered "small". and around 24-25m2 or less it's considered "tiny". From a consumer perspective might not be an important difference. but from an architect point of view each square meter makes a lot of difference

Are there any designs that are functional and modular? I feel like whenever you need another piece to hide wires or helps to support another section of the home, while yes it is nice and uniform, means you can't easily change things without affecting something else.

The living cum kitchen does not work for me. The mesh cabinet doors is a no no as it will attract dust inside. The stuffs are visible from outside which if not kept in some order will look cluttered. Plus I see total waste of space in the living room. The bedroom is claustrophobic. BUT, it is someone else's house which is made keeping in mind his/her priorities.

I am not sure about the see-through cabinets because in a small room like this the less clutter the better, and seeing the pots and plates kind of ruins it. Also, I am not sure about having combustible/flammable materials all over the walls, this is a potential death trap.

I recently discovered this channel (and immediately subscribed) as I am in the process of downsizing from a 22-years-lived 1540 SqFeet country house with multiple dettached barns to a 516 SqFeet appartment. This is quite a challenge and a very exciting moment because I have 3 month before the move and decide how I want to design the interior of my new place.
I very much appreciate your channel because it shows a lot of different solutions and the explanations given by the owners are very useful, help understand the concept.
Well done!

there is something about the colors and design that I feel uncomfortable about. Even though it is bright and minimalist it really feels disarming, something, I can't say waht makes me feel unwelcome. I even like things like very clean white andchrome but something about htis feels a bit cavelike. Maybe white versus birch off white makes a difference? Maybe it needs some plants or monstera leaves. But there is someting here desite thei minimal look does not make this feel likehome. usually I am a yes to these designs but this one makes me feel uncomfortable, not at home.

I like the design a lot, but… where do you eat? where do you sit and relax, this "sofa" does not look comfy. and one thing I do not understand in all videos. Dishwasher? Really? In tiny space, dishwasher is not priority, neither is microwave. Just wash your dishes. There is no work/eating table. A lot of the videos on this channel are nice but those architects have to start thinking in a long run, or how will someone actually living there use the space, problems with cleaning and durability. Looking nice does not mean anything if it is not practical, durable, easy to use in a day to day life.

I love almost everything about this, there are so many awesome ideas – except for the mesh kitchen cabinet fronts! I think solid anthracite fronts would look much calmer. In particular, that white washing machine with its weird shape and chrome elements and all those ugly stickers shining through is just a real eyesore. It all looks busy and is the complete opposite of the rest of the apartment! In addition I assume it’s gonna be awful to clean not just from dust but especially from liquid splashes and stuff. I think the black mesh is much better used in the bedroom door. I’m also not a fan of the microscopic bathroom tiles and think big tiles would have created a calmer, more spacious feeling but that’s probably more subjective.

I especially love the clean storage with the tall handleless doors, and the bench in front of the huge windows. It’s not a real sofa, though, that’s a bit unfortunate.

I appreciate the design choices he makes but what a horrible place to live, it's all so sterile, with only one, really bland colour, without even a window, each area is so small and confined with just a tiny door and tiny area for light. Even the utilities are hidden away in that really weird enclosure. I notice a lot of the homes on this channel are extremely sterile, with sharp edges, no decoration, no colour, everything white and uncomfortable-looking. Is that some trend in architecture or something? It'd be great to see some liveable spaces instead of some arteest's insipid fantasy.

Mick Mickymick

Jul 7, 2019, 3:03 am Reply

Why are all these architect's obsessed with hiding doors? You could add a little colour and dynamism to your apartment by getting rid of those doors, and you'd also save yourself a daily hassle by reducing something hindering your access to your items. You could also add a bit of warmth to the room by adding some reds or others colours instead of these deathly pale beige everywhere. There's also nothing to rest things on and no comfortable workspace. That bench looks way too small and with it's 90 degree angle it would be incredibly uncomfortable to sit on for more than about 20 seconds. Thank you for these videos, it's interesting to watch them but god, an apartment you could actually imagine living in would be great.
