Neighbors Help Rescue Residents From Burning Apartments


ENCOUNTER, BOULDER AND — FIRE DESTROYS AN APARTMENT COMPLEX IN AURORA. IT WAS A FRANTIC RESCUE SITUATION AS THE FLAMES RACED OUT OF CONTROL. FIVE PEOPLE WERE TREATED AT THE HOSPITAL. JEFF TODD IS LIVE AT THAT COMPLEX. IT WAS NEIGHBORS WHO HELPED RESCUE PEOPLE BEFORE FIREFIGHTERS WERE ABLE TO GET THERE. Reporter: THE FAMILIES WHO LIVE IN THE 12 APARTMENTS DISPLACED, YOU CAN SEE THIS BUILDING BOARDED UP. IT WAS NEIGHBORS WHO RAISED IN AT 2 AM — RAISED IN AT 2 AM. THEY WERE ABLE TO GET TO THESE LETTERS AND LIKELY SAVE LIVES. FLAMES STARTED BLOWING OUT BOTH SIDES OF THE BUILDING. Reporter: A NEIGHBOR SHOT THIS VIDEO AS FIREFIGHTERS WERE STILL ARRIVING. YOU CAN HEAR THE PANICKED SCREAMS FROM PEOPLE STILL INSIDE THEIR APARTMENTS. OTHER NEIGHBORS CONTINUED TO RUN TOWARD THE FLAMES, EVEN TAKING LETTERS OFF OF A NEARBY WORK TRUK — TRUCK TO HELP RESCUE PEOPLE ON THE SECOND FLOOR. I SAW FIRE AND SMOKE. Reporter: NEIGHBORS TOLD US LOUISE HELPED SAVE SOME OF THE CHILDREN. IT IS AWESOME THAT THEY TOOK THAT UPON THEMSELVES. Reporter: FIVE PEOPLE WERE TREATED FOR A RANGE OF INJURIES. THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE IS UNKNOWN BUT RESIDENTS TOLD NEIGHBORS RECENTLY A LAUNDRY MACHINE WAS OUT OF SERVICE AND BELIEVED THAT COULD HAVE BEEN THE CAUSE. INSIDE THE BUILDING, THE MAIN STAIRCASE IS HEAVILY DAMAGED IN THE UNITS HAVE AT LEAST SMOKE DAMAGE. FIRE OFFICIALS SAY ONE THING SAVE LIVES. SMOKE DETECTORS DO SAVE LIVES. TEST THEM ONCE A MONTH TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE WORKING. Reporter: THE RED CROSS IS HELPING OUT NINE FAMILIES WHO CAN COME HOME TONIGHT. WE HEARD ABOUT SOME NEIGHBORS TAKING IN ONE OF THOSE FAMILIES .
