Low Income Housing

Our Issues Twin Cities
Episode 35
Low Income Housing MINNESOTA IS A LEADER IN
PROVIDING FAMILIES AND CHILDREN WITH AFFORDABLE
HOUSING THERE ARE OVER DOZENS OF LOW INCOME HOUSING OPTIONS
IN THE TWIN CITIES WE INTRODUCE YOU TO A COUPLE
ADMIRABLE ORGANIZATIONS THAT HAVE HELPED CHANGE SO
MANY LIVES IN OUR COMMUNITY I’M RANA KAMAL OUR ISSUES
TWIN CITIES STARTS NOW SINCE 1972 THE PROJECT
FOR PRIDE AND LIVING BEGAN AS AN AFFORDABLE
HOUSING DEVELOPER TODAY THIS NON PROFIT
ORGANIZATION HAS EXPANDED INTO A MULTI SERVICE PROGRAM
WHICH EMPOWERS LOW INCOME PEOPLE TO BECOME SELF RELIANT
THROUGH THEIR VARIOUS
INTEGRATED SERVICES PPL WAS FOUNDED IN 1972 REALLY
PRIMARILY AS A HOUSING DEVELOPMENT ORGANIZATION HERE
IN SOUTH MINNEAPOLIS BUILDING SINGLE FAMILY HOUSES
REHABBING HOUSES FOR INDIVIDUALS LOWER INCOME
FAMILIES TO LIVE IN REALLY HAD GROWN DRAMATICALLY
OVER THOSE 40 YEARS TO INCLUDE HOUSING DEVELOPMENT EMPLOYMENT
AND TRAINING YOUTH DEVELOPMENT AND KIND OF A RANGE OF SOCIAL
SERVICES SO IT’S A BIG
ORGANIZATION NOW THAT GREW OUT OF A VERY
SMALL VERY HIMBLE BEGINNINGS WHAT’S THE MAIN MISSION OF PPL WE REALLY EXIST TO INCREASE AND
ENHANCE SELF SUFFICIENCY FOR LOWER INCOME FOLKS IN THE
TWIN CITIES AREA AND REALLY THE BELIEF THAT WHILE OUR CORE
IS HOUSING IT’S A BELIEF THAT THERE’S MORE TO STABILITY
FOR A FAMILY THAN JUST HOUSING YOU NEED MORE THAN A ROOF
OVER YOUR HEAD YOU NEED JOBS YOU NEED SKILLS YOU NEED FAMILY
SUPPORT YOU NEED YOUTH
DEVELOPMENT AND THAT’S KIND OF THE PROGRAM
PHILOSOPHY HOW MANY PEOPLE DOES PPL SERVE ABOUT 13 THOUSAND FOLKS A YEAR
A LOT OF THAT IS THROUGH OUR
HOUSING BUT ALSO THROUGH OUR EMPLOYMENT
PROGRAMS ABOUT 3 THOUSAND FOLKS A YEAR COME THROUGH OUR
EMPLOYMENT AND TRAINING PROGRAMS WE WORK WITH 400 KIDS
A YEAR ACROSS THE TWIN CITIES AT A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT SITES
KIND OF SFTER SCHOOL WORK
TUTORING AND MENTORING WORK SO IT’S A
BIG NUMBER BUT IT’S ALSO
SOMETHING THAT’S VERY YOU WORK IN A VERY MICRO LEVEL
IN TERMS OF ONE KID AT A TIME ONE FAMILY AT A TIME BUT WE
HAVE KIND OF A LARGE SCALE
OPERATION THAT REALLY HAS ALLOWED US
TO REALLY INCREASE THE NUMBER
OF PEOPLE WE WORK WITH WHAT’S SPECIFICALLY THE
TARGET AUDIENCE IT DEPENDS ON THE PROGRAM FOR
SOME OF OUR HOUSING PROGRAMS
THAT KIND OF DEFINED BY POVERTY
LEVELS AND ARE MEDIAN INCOME WE TEND TO WORK IN HOUSING
WITH FOLKS WHO ARE 50 PERCENT
AND BELOW AREA MEDIAN INCOME SO FAMILIES EARNING LESS THAN 30
OR 40 THOUSAND IN OUR EMPLOYMENT
PROGRAM A RANGE OF FOLKS SOME OF WHOM
ALREADY HAVE A GED AND ARE READY
TO GET INTO THE WORK FORCE AND MAYBE WORKING ALREADY
BUT WE ALSO KNOW IN EMPLOYMENT
THAT FOLKS WHO COME INTO OUR
EMPLOYMENT PROGRAMS MAY START TO HAVE WAGES AT ABOUT 11
THOUSAND DOLLARS A YEAR WHEN
THEY FINISH OUR PROGRAMS THEY’RE EARNING
ABOUT 25 THOUSAND A YEAR SO
STILL STRUGGLING FINANCIALLY WITHOUT A DOUBT BUT
THEY’RE AT LEAST ON A PATHWAY
AND THEY’VE HAD SOME GROWTH IN THAT PERIOD OF TIME THAT’S
SIGNIFICANT THAT’S EXCELLENT NOW I KNOW
YOU GUYS ARE A MULTI SERVICE
AGENCY CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT SOME
OF THE SERVICES THAT PPL OFFERS RIGHT WELL AGAIN OUR HOUSING
DEVELOPMENT WHICH IS ABOUT BUILDING AFFORDABLE HOUSING
UNITS FOR FOLKS IN KIND OF A
RANGE OF INCOME LEVELS IS ONE OF OUR CORE AREAS OF
SERVICES OUR EMPLOYMENT
AND TRAINING WORK INCLUDES SPECIFIC TRAINING AND
BANKING AND HEALTH CARE AND
HUMAN SERVICES AS WELL AS KIND OF GENERAL
EMPLOYMENT TRAINING AROUND
PREPARING RESUMES UNDERSTANDING HOW TO SURF
THE WEB FOR JOBS OUR YOUTH
DEVELOPMENT WORK IS A LOT OF OUT OF SCHOOL TIME
AFTER SCHOOL WORK AND THEN
SOCIAL SUPPORT FOR THE FAMILIES THAT LIVE IN OR
HOUSING THE RANGE OF CASE
MANAGEMENT KIND OF INFORMATION AND
REFERALS MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORTS THOSE KIDS OF THINGS TO HELP
THEM KIND OF THE WRAP AROUND
SERVICES THAT HELPS ANY FAMILY TO REALLY
SUCCEED SO A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT
PROGRAMS THAT OUR OFFER SO TELL
ME HOW IMPORTANT IS PPL FOR LOW INCOME FAMILIES WELL FOR THE FOLKS WE WORKS
WITH SIGNIFICANTLY IMPORTANT WE HEAR THOSE STORIES LITERALLY
I HEAR THOSE STORIES EVERY DAY TO LAST NIGHT I TALK TO A WOMAN
IN ONE OF OUR HOUSING
DEVELOPMENTS WHO HAD BEEN ON PROBATION IN FOUR
DIFFERENT COUNTIES WAS IN CHEMICAL DEPENDENCY
TREATMENT DIDN’T HAVE HER KIDS FOR ALONG TIME SHE NOW HAS
GRADUATED FROM TECHNICAL
COLLEGE HAS HER KIDS IS WORKING FULL
TIME AND REALLY IS ON A MUCH
MORE PRODUCTIVE PATH SO AND THAT
STORY REPEATS ITSELF LITERALLY
EVERY DAY HERE AT PPL SO IT’S SIGNIFICANT FOR THE
FOLKS WE WORK WITH WHAT MAKES PPL STAND OUT
FROM THE REST OF OTHER
ORGANIZATIONS ONE I THINK OUR TRACK RECORD
AND OUR LONGEVITY WE’VE BEEN AROUND FOR 43 YEARS
NOW AND THAT’S SIGNIFICANT
I THINK THE BREDTH OF OUR SERVICES IS ALSO
UNIQUE WE REALLY DO BELIEVE IN KIND OF WORKING WITH THE
FAMILY IN A MUCH MORE HOLISTIC WAY WE HAVE THE CAPACITY TO
ACTUALLY DO THAT WE ALSO
HAVE A VERY ENTREPRENURIAL APPROACH OUR
FOUNDER JOE SAVAGIO WAS KNOWN
AS SOMEBODY WHO KIND OF WORKED THIS
NEIGHBORHOOD AS A FORMER PRIEST
AND LITERALLY WORKED WITH FOLKS AND SAID WHAT
IS IT THAT YOU NEED WE’LL FIGURE
IT OUT AND THAT ENTRPRENURIAL APPROACH
HAS ALWAYS KIND OF BEEN PART
OF WHO PPL HAS BEEN WE’RE VERY GROUNDED
IN SEVERAL OF THE NEIGHBORHOODS
THAT WE WORK WITH NORTH MINNEAPOLIS SOUTH
MINNEAPOLIS PARTS OF ST PAUL SO WE’RE ROOTED I THINK UNLIKE
SOME OTHER COMMUNITIES AND
WE HAVE KIND OF A TRACK RECORD AND ASSETS ON THE GROUND IN A
LOT OF THOSE NEIGHBORHOODS WHERE
WE CAN POINT TO THAT’S A LITTLE BIT UNIQUE THAN
A NUMBER OF OTHER ORGANIZATIONS WHAT IS THE MAIN FOCUS NOW OF
PPL TODAY I THINK EMPLOYMENT AND TRAINING
WE THINK IS JUST A CRITICAL ISSUE IF YOU LOOK AT THE
CHANGING DEMOGRAPHICS IN
THE WORK FORCE THE NUMBER OF RETIREES THE
NUMBER OF JOBS WE NEED TO FILL AND A LOT OF THOSE DEMOGRAPHICS
REALLY COMING NOW FROM INTER CITY COMMUNITIES FROM
LOWER INCOME COMMUNITIES OF
COLOR THAT IS OUR SWEET SPOT THAT IS
WHAT WE DO BEST THE AFFORDABLE
HOUSING CRISIS ALSO A SIGNIFICANT CHALLENGE IN
THIS COMMUNITY VACANCY RATES ARE DOWN LOWER THAN 2 PERCENT
EVEN SO THE NEED FOR AFFORDABLE RENTAL HOUSING CONTINUES TO
GROW AND THAT’S ALWAYS BEEN
AT THE HEART OF WHAT WE DO AND I THINK IT
WILL CONTINUE TO BE COMING UP ON OUR
ISSUES TWIN CITIES A SUPPORTIVE HOUSING PROGRAM
THAT HELPS WOMEN AND CHILDREN GET BACK ON THEIR FEET CREATED ALMOST 4 DECADES AGO
THE AWARD WINNING MULTI SERVICE PROGRAM PERSPECTIVES WAS
DESIGNEDTO HELP WOMEN AND
CHILDREN MOVE OUT OF CYCLES OF DESPAIR
INTO HOPE PERSPECTIVES BEGAN NOW ALMOST
4 DECADES AGO AND WHEN IT FIRST
STARTED IT WAS VERY DIFFERENT THAN WHAT
IT IS TODAY IT STARTED WITH
WOMEN WHO HAD A VERY STRONG
COMMITMENT AROUND BRINGING
AWARENESS WITHIN THE COMMUNITY AROUND CHEMICAL
DEPENDENCY AND ALL OF THE
EFFECTS THAT IT HAD ON FAMILY THEIR
FAMILIES WERE PERSONALLY TOUCHED
BY CHEMICAL DEPENDENCY SO THEY WERE EAGER
TO BRING MORE VISIBILITY TO THE DISEASE SO THAT PEOPLE
WOULD UNDERSTAND BECAUSE
THERE WAS SO MUCH STIGMA ON IT THAT MANY YEARS
AGO SO SINCE THAT TIME ARE ROOTS HAVE STAYED IN
CHEMICAL DEPENDENCY AND
ADDICTION THE WOMEN AND THE FAMILIES
WE SERVE MANY ARE MOST
OF THEM ALL OF THEM IN OUR HOUSING
PROGRAM ARE IN RECOVERY
BUT MANY OF THE FAMILIES THAT COME TO PERSPECTIVES ARE
SEEKING RECOVERY OR HAVE
A BACKGROUND IN ADDICTION SO THAT’S WHERE
WE ARE TODAY THE THREAT IS
STILL THERE BUT NOW WE’VE MOVED FROM
COMMUNITY AWARENESS IN
OUR EARLY FOUNDERS TO DIRECT SERVICE THEY BECAME
VERY POPULAR WOMEN WERE
KIND OF JUST SWARM TO THEIR THURSDAY
AFTERNOON MEETINGS WHICH
THEY DIDN’T NECESSARILY TALK ABOUT
CHEMICAL DEPENDENCY THEY WERE VERY CLEVER IN THE
SENSE THAT THEY TALKED A LOT
ABOUT THE ISSUES THAT ARE INVOLVED WITH THE
FAMILY THAT WILL EXPERIENCE
THOSE ADDICTIONS THEY TALKED ABOUT SELF ESTEEM
AND THEY TALKED ABOUT FAMILY
SYSTEMS THEY TALKED ABOUT WHAT A WOMEN’S
ROLE MIGHT BE YOU KNOW AS A
CARETAKER THEY TALKED ABOUT CO DEPENDENCY
SO THEY TALKED ABOUT A LOT OF
THOSE SYSTEMIC ISSUES AND IT BROUGHT LOTS OF PEOPLE IN
BECAUSE EVERYBODY WAS INTRIGUED
BY THE SOCIAL ISSUES AT THAT TIME AND ACTUALLY THE SOCIAL
SUPPORT GROUP GREW OUT OF
THAT MOVEMENT SO FROM THAT COMMUNITY
AWARENESS THIS WAS ABOUT 5
YEARS AFTER THE AGENCY STARTED THAT SOCIAL
AWARENESS HAD REALLY IT WAS
LIKE A WILD FIRE AND EVERYONE WAS DOING IT AND
THERE WERE LOTS OF SOCIAL
SUPPORT GROUPS AT THAT TIME THAT’S WHEN I SAID
IT BEGANSO IWANTED TO MOVE PROGRAMMING BECAUSE I CAME OUT
OF A BACKGROUND OF RUNNING
PROGRAMS IN ANTI POVERTY AGENCY IN
WISCONSIN AND I STARTED TO WORK
WITH THE BOARD ABOUT WHERE THE NEEDS
WERE WHO HAD RESOURCES WHO DIDN’T HAVE RESOURCES AND
THAT SET US ON A PATH OF WORKING EVENTUALLY NOW 30 YEARS LATER OR
25 YEARS LATER WORKING DIRECTLY
WITH HOMELESS WOMEN AND CHILDREN
WHO WERE RECOVERING AND TO
THAT END WE ARE NOW THE LARGEST SUPPORTIVE HOUSING
PROGRAM FOR WOMEN AND
CHILDREN IN MINNESOTA AMAZING AND WHAT IS THE MAIN
MISSION OF PERSPECTIVES THE MISSION IS TO BREAK CYCLES
FOR AT RISK FAMILIES TO HAVE
TOTAL FAMILY RECOVERY AND IN THAT SENSE THE CYCLE IS
BROKEN BY WORKING SO MUCH
WITH THE CHILDREN THE CYCLE IS BROKEN BY THE WOMAN
COMING HERE IN RECOVERY SHE
DESIRES A LIFE OF SOBRIETY THROUGH THAT
SHE WILL THEN BEGIN TO WORK WITH
OUR CASE MANAGER SHE MOVES INTO A FURNISHED
APARTMENT AND SHE’S COMITTED TO
A CHANGED LIFE NOW THAT’S THE BEGINNING OF A
BROKEN CYCLE BUT WHERE THE
WORK REALLY IS DONE WITH THE CHILDREN SO THE
CHILDREN HAVE BEEN RAISED WITH
LOTS OF TRAUMA AND THIS IS THE ONLY THING THEY
KNOW SO THEY COME HERE AND
WE INTRODUCE THEM TO ALL KINDS OF PROGRAMMING
AROUND ACADEMICS AND SOCIAL
SKILLS AND NUTRITION AND LEARNING
COMPUTERS AND TECHNOLOGY SO WE INTRODUCE AN ALL NEW WORLD
TO THE KIDS AND IN THAT SENSE THAT’S WHEN THE CYCLE WE BELIEVE
IS REALLY GOING TO BE BROKEN SO HOW IS A WOMAN ACCEPTED
INTO PERSPECTIVES IT’S NOT EASY SHE HAS TO GO
THROUGH A PRETTY STRENUOUS
INTERVIEW SO ALL OF OUR RESIDENTS ARE
INTERVIEWED AND SO WHEN A
WOMAN COMES SHE IS SENDING AN APPLICATION
AND WE GET HUNDREDS SO HERS
MIGHT HAVE CLIMBED TO THE TOP OF THE PILE AND MAYBE A SHELTER OR
TREATMENT CENTER IS VERY
ADVOCATING FOR HER HEARD LOTS ABOUT HER PUSHING
FOR THE INTERVIEW AND SO THIS
WOMEN THAT IS INTERVIEWED PROBABLY OVER 4
HOURS WITH OUR CASE MANGERS AND INTAKE WORKERS AND WHAT
HAPPENS IN THAT INTERVIEW IS
TO DETERMINE HOW READY IS SHE FOR CHANGE
AND HOW COMITTED IS SHE BECAUSE WE’RE A PROGRAM NOT
A HOUSE WHERE THERES A LOT
OF HOUSING PROGRAMS WHOSE PRIMARY
MISSION IS TO HOUSE OURS
IS A RECOVERY PROGRAM WHERE WE WILL THEN GIVE YOU
A HOUSE IF YOU ARE ACCEPTED
INTO THE PROGRAM AND THAT HOUSE IS AN APARTMENT
AND WE HAVE A HOUSING CAMPUS AND OUR 5 APARTMENT BUILDINGS
ARE ALL BACKED UP AGAINST A
BIG CITY PARK AND THEY’RE ALL LIKE 5 PATIOS
BRICK WALKS AND PLAYGROUNDS SO IT’S A COMMUNITY THAT THE
WOMAN MOVES INTO AND IT’S
A RECOVERING COMMUNITY A THERAPUTIC COMMUNITY SO SHE
HAS TO BE PRETTY COMMITTED
BECAUSE THERE’S LOTS OF SERVICES THAT WE HAVE HERE AND WE WILL
WANT TO MAKE SURE SHE TAKES
OPPORTUNITY OF THOSE SERVICES IT’S REALLY CHALLENGING TO
RECOVER FROM ADDICTION IT’S
REALLY CHALLENGING TO RECOVER FROM HOMELESSNESS I
THINK OUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE IS
HAVING THE RESOURCES AND ACCESS TO COMMUNITY
RESOURCES TO GET FAMILIES BACK
ON THEIR FEET NO ONE ENDS UP HOMELESS BY
ACCIDENT IT’S A TOUGH SITUATION
TO BE IN AND REALLY TOUGH TO GET OUT
OF IF IT WAS EASY TO GET OUT OF EVERYONE WOULD DO IT WE PROVIDE
THESE KIND OF SUPPORTS FOR
FAMILIES BECAUSE IT’S NOT EASY I THINK THE MOST
CHALLENGING THING ABOUT
CASE MANAGEMENT IS FINDING COMMUNITY PARTNERS
WHO ARE WILLING TO SUPPORT OUR FAMILES BECAUSE IT CAN BE
CHALLENGING IF YOU HAVE A RECORD WE’RE ABOUT STORIES SO IT’S ONE
STORY AFTER ANOTHER AND THE SOTRIES ARE WHAT
MAKES IT WORTH IT ABSOLUTELY THAT’S WHY I’M STILL
HERE AFTER 32 YEARS THAT’S WHY
SO MANY WE HAVE VERY LITTLE THE TURNOVERS NOT BIG HERE
PEOPLE JUST GET HOOKED YOU GET
HOOKED IN SEEING A LIFE CHANGE SEE A FAMILY RECOVER FROM
A HORRIBLE SITUATION LIKE
HOMELESSNESS OR PAINFUL SITUATION LIKE
ADDICTION SEEING THOSE PEOPLE
HAVE ANY KIND OF SUCCESS IS THE BEST
FEELING EVER ONCE YOU HAVE THAT
FEELING YOU NEVER WANT ANOTHER JOB IT’S VERY IMPORTANT THIS
PLACE IS A VERY IMPORTANT PLACE
BECAUSE PEOPLE GET A SECOND CHANCE AND THEY GET TO CREATE
HOPE THAT THEIR LIVES COULD BE
BETTER AND THAT’S A GREAT JOB UP NEXT ON OUR ISSUES TWIN
CITIES WHY THESE ORGANIZATIONS ARE SO IMPORTANT FOR LOW
INCOME FAMILIES SERVING THOUSANDS OF MEN
WOMEN AND CHILDREN AND FAMILIES ORGANIZATIONS SUCH AS THE
PROJECT FOR PRIDE AND LIVING AND PERSPECTIVES HAVE HELPED
SO MANY PEOPLE TURN THEIR
LIVES AROUND I LEFT CHICAGO 12 YEARS AGO TO
GET AWAY FROM ADDICTION BUT
I DIDN’T GET HELP AND BROUGHT THE
ADDICTION WITH ME IT PROGRESSED FROM ME SMOKING
MARIJUANA TO 2 YEARS AGO ENDED UP SMOKING CRACK COCAINE I WAS 37 WHEN I HAD MY SON I
LOOK AT HIM AND SAY I GOT TO
GIVE HIM A CHANCE IT’S NOT FAIR TO HIM AND I LOVE
HIM I DIDN’T WANT HIM TO BE
TAKEN AWAY AWAY FROM ME SO I KNEW I HAD
TO DO THE RIGHT THING I JUST GOT TIRED AND THAT’S THE
THING ABOUT PEOPLE WITH
ADDICTIVE BEHAVIORS YOU HAVE TO GET TIRED AND YOU
HAVE TO HIT YOUR ROCK BOTTOM AND FOR ME THAT’S WHAT
HAPPENED 2 YEARS AGO I WALKED INTO THIS APARTMENT
THAT WAS FULLY FURNISHED THAT
WAS SO BEAUTIFUL I JUST FELL TO MY KNEES OH MY
GOD CAN’T BELIEVE IT YOU KNOW I JUST FELL TO MY KNEES AND
CRIED LIKE A BABY BECAUSE I
COULDN’T BELIEVE THIS WAS MINE YOU KNOW FOR ME AND MY SON
IT WAS JUST SO PERFECT THE PEOPLE HERE ARE SO
SUPPORTIVE I GOT A GANG OF
PEOPLE THAT WORK FOR ME JUST FOR ME AND I TRIED TO
UTILIZE EVERYBODY I JUST
MADE 2 YEARS CLEAN LAST SATURDAY AND HE WALKED IN MY
ROOM AND SAID MOM WHAT’S
TODAY AND I SAID OCTOBER 4TH HE WAS LIKE
CONGRATULATIONS AT 2
YEARS HOW DID YOU DO IT AND I SAID I GOT OUT THE WAY I
WOULD NEVER EVER BE WHERE
I AM RIGHT NOW IF IT WASN’T FOR PERSPECTIVES I HAD TO BE A PARENT AT A
YOUNG AGE SO YOU KNOW IT WAS HARD AND STRESSFUL SO
KIND OF LEAVE ME OFF TO YOU
KNOW THE DRUGS I SMOKED ALL DURING MY PREGNANCY
ALWAYS GOING OUT EVERY WEEKEND
TO THE CLUBS AND JUST LIIVING THE WILD LIFE A
YEAR LATER CHILD PROTECTION GOT INVOLVED IT WASN’T TRYING TO GET
MY KIDS BACK BECAUSE I HAVE A
SAFE ENVIRONMENT FOR MY KIDS TO GO TO I WENT OT THE
SHELTER AND THEN A WEEK LATER
I WAS IN PERSPECTIVES BY THE GRACE
OF GOD I’M LIKE WOW THE PROGRAMS HERE TAUGHT ME
HOW TO COMMUNICATE I STARTED
BACK TO SCHOOL LAST WEEK I WAS SO HAPPY FOR MY
GED THERE’S A NEW START A NEW
BEGINNING IT’S JUST UNBELIEVABLE THE
FEELING JUST TO COME IN AND KNOW
THAT YOU’RE SOBER AND IN A SAFE
ENVIRONMENT AND IT’S YOURS
AND YOUR KIDS I STARTED DRINKING MY
GIRLFRIEND AND I MUST
OF BEEN 14 YEARS OLD AND WE’D PITCH A TENT IN OUR
BACKYARD AND SNEAK OUR
PARENTS LIQUOR THEN FILL IT UP WITH WATER AND
STARTED DRINKING LIKE THAT AND
THEN EVENTUALLY STARTED SMOKING WEED WHICH PROGRESSED INTO
A DAILY HABIT AND THEN I STARTED SMOKING METH
AND TAKING ADDERALL THOUGHT IT WOULD HELP ME CONCENTRATE IN
SCHOOL AND HELP WITH MY ADHD SO I FELT MORE FOCUSED WHEN I
WAS USING DRUGS AND
CONTINUED TO USE THROUGH SO PROBABLY THROUGH THE
AGE OF 21 AND PICKED IT UP AT A DIFFERENT RIGT
STARTED GOING WITH IT AND THAT BECAME ALL THAT I DID
WITH MY LIFE WAS USING WHEN I WAS 23 I BECAME PREGNANT
WITH JAYDEN AND I CONTINUED TO USE USING
LED TO SELLIING S AND SELLING BLOOD TO MORE
USING I WENT OT JAIL AND CAME OUT ON CONDITIONAL
RELEASE MY SON AT THIS POINT
WAS LIVING WITH MY FATHER IT WAS A BRIEF
THING THERE WAS NO OPEN CPS
CASE UNTIL I HAD GONE TO JAIL AGAIN
BECAUSE I COULDN’T STAY SOBER AND MY SON WAS TAKEN AWAY
FROM ME BY THE COUNTY AND I COULDN’T STAY SOBER TO STAY OUT
OF JAIL FOR THE LIFE OF ME AND
I KNEW THAT I NEEDED HELP I NEEDED TO GET
INTO TREATMENT NOW NOT NEXT WEEK NOT ON
MONDAY LIKE RIGHT NOW BEFORE COMING TO PERSPECTIVES
I WAS A MESS I GUESS I I WAS TRYING MY HARDEST TO GET
TO WHERE YOU NEEDED TO BE BUT I DIDN’T HAVE THE TOOLS OR
KNOW THE TOOLS OR THE RESOURCES TO GET ANYWHERE AND I FELT STUCK IT WAS SO IMPORTANT TO ME THAT
PERSPECTIVES HAD SERVICES FOR
JAYDEN AS WELL I MEAN JAYDEN COULDN’T COME HOME
WITH ME UNTIL WE HAD A PLACE TO
LIVE WHEN I FIRST WALKED IN HERE IT S
SO EARLY IN THE MORNING AND IT WAS AMAZING EVERYTHING
WE NEEDED WAS HERE AND I’VE BEEN WALKING AROUND
WITH BINS OF STUFF FOR EVERY THAT TRAVELED WITH JAYDEN
AND MINES CLOTHES IN AND OUT OF DIFFERENT PLACES
FOR ALONG TIME AND WHEN I
CAME HERE I REALIZED THIS IS WHAT
MANAGEABILITY LOOKS LIKE IT WAS CLEAN AND THERE’S
BEDS IT WAS PERFECT THE MOST BENEFICIAL PROGRAM
PERSPECTIVES OFFERED ME WOULD BE HAVING A CASE
MANAGER ON SITE HAVING SUPPORT IF I HAVE ANY QUESTIONS HAVING
PEOPLE I CAN REACH OUT TO AND I CAN GET ANSWERS FOR ME
IF THEY DON’T ALREADY HAVE THE ANSWERS THE SUPPORT OF
A COMMUNITY OF PEOPLE GOING
THROUGH SIMILAR SITUATIONS THAT I’M IN I WOULD LOVE TO GIVE MY SON
A HOUSE AND A BACKYARD FOR HIM TO PLAY IN RIGHT NOW
I’M WORKING AS HARD AS I CAN TO GET US THERE AND TO OPEN
SPOTS FOR OTHER FAMILIES WHO NEED TO BE WHERE WE’RE
AT I DON’T KNOW HOW LONG
IT’S GOING TO TAKE US TO GET THERE BUT I KNOW
I’M GOING TO KEEP WORKING
TOWARDS IT TILL WE GET THERE FOR THEM TO BE ABLE TO MOVE
FORWARD AND TAKE OPPORTUNITY AND GET BACK IN SCHOOL GET A JOB
STAY SOBER GET THEIR CHILDREN STABILIZED INTO BEING ABLE TO
GET THEIR CREDIT RATING UP ENOUGH TO BUY A HOUSE IS A
GREAT SUCCESS BECAUSE 78 PERCENT OF THE WOMEN WHO COME HERE AFTER
18 MONTHS IN 2 YEARS WILL MOVE BACK INTO PERMANENT HOUSING SO
WE HAVE GREAT SUCCESS IN THAT SO THERE’S JUST STORIES
THEY BECOME NURSES BECOME
COUNCELORS ONE WOMEN SPOKE I MET RECENTLY
WHO IS A CD COUNCELOR NOW SO THEY TEND TO GO IN THE
HELPING PROFESSIONS OF COURSE I’M ALWAYS LOOKING WE
ALWAYS HOPE TO THAT THEY’RE
THE TRADES THAT THEY WILL GO INTO SO THAT
THERE’S LIVABLE WAGES WE DON’T
WANT OUR WOMEN JUST WORKING IN MAYBE A FAST FOOD PLACE AND
JUST MAKING MINIMUM WAGE AND
WORKING 30 HOURS A WEEK WITHOUT BENEFITS WE WANT THEM
TO BE ABLE TO GET INTO AN ACTUAL CAREER AND THAT’S
WHERE WE PUSH AND THAT’S WHERE
MANY OF OUR WOMEN WILL END UP SO JUST SUCCESS
STORIES IF YOU WOULD LIKE MORE
INFORMATION ON ANY OF THESE
ORGANIZATIONS PLEASE VISIT THEM ONLINE THANK
YOU FOR JOINING ME THIS WEEK ON OUR ISSUES TWIN CITIES I’M
