Lonely Valentines Day & Moving Apartments

Hey guys, it’s Kim Dao here. Welcome back to my vlog channel! Today I’m going to Shinjuku and I’m going to meet up with Emma! So she’s another YouTuber, her channel is Tokidoki Traveller and I’ve never met her before, so we are going to meet for the first time today! So what’s happening is in a few days time we have to film kind of like a collab video together. We are going to be working with Odigo Travel again and this time we are going to be doing something really exciting! So the thing is, because we’ve never met before and we kind of have to make a video together, we thought that it would be good to kind of meet up and get to know each other a little bit before we actually start filming. We are going to go out for lunch and then, you know, just get to know each other and talk about things! I’ve heard a lot about her and I’m sure she’s heard a lot about me through Chris! And then we’ll see how things go from there, Bronwyn’s going shopping in Shibuya and if I have time I might go with her, but I have a lot to get done at home because I’m planning to ship a lot of my stuff back to Australia tomorrow. So I need to like, pack all of my boxes and stuff. Probably gonna try and find a place in Shinjuku to eat. I’m sure we’ll find a place. And then, yeah we’ll maybe go to a coffee shop and chat. We’ll see how things go. And then I might do a little bit of shopping, I don’t know. I don’t really want to shop though, because I wanna save money! Because I spent a lot of money like, a few weeks ago going to Osaka and all that stuff, so I need–really need to save up, because I’m moving soon and I’m trying to find a new apartment as well, but it’s really hard to find. So I guess I’ll about that another time, uh yes we have to move out of our apartment, like in a few weeks time. So that’s why I’m trying to find a new apartment to stay in, but it’s really hard guys, like finding an apartment in Japan. But I’m not planning to stay in Japan for that much longer though, so that’s a problem because most apartments you need to sign contracts for like, at least one or two years, and because I’m not planning to stay for that much longer finding a short-term one is really hard. Hopefully I can find a place that I can stay in in the next few weeks or so. Anyway, I’m gonna head out now so I’ll see you guys in Shinjuku! I totally forgot today was Valentines’ Day, my boyfriend messaged me. We are going to eat sukiyaki today, we’re gonna have a tabehodai course which is like all you can eat for ¥1,600. Ah, I’m with Emma by the way! We just met! So, yeah we’re gonna go for this one, it’s cheap. This one was only just vegetables and I’m like, “Ehh, no.” Oh wait, it’s not just vegetables, you get all this! This is for lunch. …You wanna get this one? [Emma] What’s the difference? ‘Cause like, it’s not tabehodai, but this one is tabehodai, but… …are we gonna eat that much? [Emma] I don’t know. [Emma] I haven’t had breakfast.
– Okay. Okay, let’s get this one. So we are getting sukiyaki! So we got the meat, the vegetables, rice, and then I got kimchi soup and then Emma got the yuzu soup, that’s kinda interesting actually. Alright guys, I am back home now and… I know I kinda was planning to do a bit of shopping and I was going to go to Shibuya to meet up with Bronwyn and Sharla. Things kindaaa… Happened. So I couldn’t do that. So Emma really wants to move out of her apartment and she’s been having a lot of trouble trying to find an apartment or company that would be willing to let her move in. So in Japan, when you want to move into an apartment it’s not the easiest thing because a lot of places, they require you to have like, a longer visa or they require you to have a job, they require you to have a certain amount of salary or I dunno, there’s just a lot things that they consider. Especially if you are a foreigner. And if you’re a foreigner, it’s harder to find an apartment because some places only accept Japanese people for example. It’s very difficult to go through and you know, I’ve been through it, it sucks! And I kind of have to go through that again because I’m actually moving soon. So it’s just very difficult if you’re a foreigner in Japan if you want to move. Stuff like that. Anyway, so Emma really wants to move out of her apartment, she told me that she was still living in her tiny apartment and I feel so sorry for her because my old apartment, I thought that was small! But like her current apartment is like half the size of my old place and I was like, “Oh no no no, you have to get out of there. That’ll drive you crazy.” Anyways, so she was having trouble finding a company and I know some companies in Japan that are very chill, so I was like, “Do you want me to take you?” So I took her to a company I knew and they were very chill. Like I just walked into their doors like, “Hey, got a friend here looking for an apartment, can you help?” “Can you show us the apartment today?” And then they were like, “Sure!” So then they showed us the apartments and she found one that she really liked! So I’m so happy about that! It’s not too far away from me as well so we can like, hang out and chill out together. So even though we just met today, she’s a really cool person. I had a lot of fun with her and I’m so happy I was able to help her find an apartment! So she’s very happy that she found an apartment so she’s coming over to my place tomorrow! And we’re gonna go down to the company together, and then we’re going to sign a contract for her! So I told her that I’ll be there, just to make sure things are all good. Living in Japan is kind of like, a pain. But the good thing is that I do have a driver’s license. So I can drive. I mean, I don’t like driving in Tokyo, but if worse comes to worse, I can do it. So there’s that. And then pretty much after that I went straight home. Because I was kinda tired and it was gonna be a long ride to get back to Shibuya. So then, I thought you know, I’ll just stay home. I really wanted to do some shopping for Valentines’ Day and like, have a nice dinner or something like that with friends, but it’s okay! I had dinner alone or– I might Skype with my boyfriend. If he’s back from work. This is my second Valentines’ Day alone and it kinda sucks. But you know, it’s okay! I am going back to Australia like, some time this year so I’ll see my boyfriend then. Yeah, we just messaged each other throughout the day and stuff like that. But even then, when I was in Australia I never celebrated Valentines’ Day. At all. Like, we’d go out I guess for dinner, but… To be honest, it’s not a big deal to us. Like my boyfriend and I, we don’t really buy presents and stuff for each other anymore. We stopped buying birthday presents as well because honestly… We found it a pain in the ass to find presents for each other. Like birthday presents… I felt that we’d both be stressing out a month before each other’s birthdays. Wanting to know what to buy them and just not knowing what to get each other. Because mainly, for me, if I want something I’ll just go buy it. I’m trying to word this in a way that doesn’t sound, you know– I don’t know what I’m saying. Let’s just say that we’re both in a position where we’re both financially stable, so if I want something I’ll just go buy it? Like I don’t need to think about it, I don’t need to save money for it because I’ve already got the money? That’s why it’s hard to find presents for each other. So we kinda stopped buying presents for each other like… Four years ago? Because it just got to the point where like… It’s just too much stress and we don’t need the stress. We’re both just happy spending time with each other, that’s the thing that matters the most, right? So because of that we don’t buy presents for each other anymore, which is much better, so much less stress! Anyway, so I’m gonna go film some stuff so I guess I’ll just keep vlogging for today even though this vlog, I was expecting a lot more–to do a lot more, but unfortunately, um yeah, that’s not happening. Oh well! And then I should make some dinner. Or I might order dinner, I don’t know yet. Depends on how I feel, but. I’ve got a lot of work I have to get done. And I need to pack up a lot of stuff! Because I’m shipping a bunch of stuff tomorrow because yes, I am going to be leaving Japan. I don’t know when, but soon-ish and because I have way too much crap with me, I don’t want to take it all with me when I move. A lot of you guys wanted an apartment tour? Yes, I will do an apartment tour of my current place when I move out. Not now just because you know, I need to keep my privacy! So I couldn’t be bothered cooking dinner so I ordered a large pizza to have by myself. On a very lonely Valentines’ Day. Alright guys, it is actually the next day, but yeah, I ended up filming the whole night and then editing videos so I wasn’t really filming anything else worth– interesting to put into this vlog. Today I went out and shipped a few items back. So because of that, I’ve just been super busy lately. Anyway, Emma came over again this morning and, yeah we sorted out her apartment, so that’s great! Went out for a Pokémon walk and then shipped stuff back and yeah! That’s about it! That was my day! So thank you guys so much for watching this video, I’m gonna end this here, ’cause I’m gonna take a shower, take my makeup off and try and sleep early because I have to wake up early to go to Akihabara to film for a project with Odigo tomorrow! Please subscribe to this channel if you haven’t yet, thumbs up this video if you enjoyed it and I’ll see you next time! Bye!!

I stopped buying presents for my husband too. I just ask him if he wants me to get whatever it is he was planning to buy (shoes, video game etc.) and he does the same for me.

Best of luck finding a new apartment. Is Bronwyn moving with you? Sorry you were alone on Valentine's Day, did you at least buy yourself some chocolate? Chocolate makes everything better.

On the topic of not buying presents, here's an idea that me and my siblings are gonna try out starting this year that I think might be interesting for you and your boyfriend. So instead of buying gifts, we're gonna just put a certain amount of money aside every time it's one of our birthdays or Christmas. And then eventually use that money for a family vacation ? I like this idea because you'd then be investing more money on experiences rather than materialistic items!

Why don't you stay over at Taylor's house for the couple of weeks while you sort things out and look for a new place? She has a guest room that she lets Sharla use when she sleeps over. Since you are good friends with Taylor, I'm pretty sure she wouldn't mind if you are only staying for a week or two.

I'm so much like you Kim, not fussed on presents anymore. Although it's lovely to receive gifts, but buying them for each other is just a pain now. If I want something, like you, I will just buy it or save for the item. Valentine's Day is never a big deal for either my partner or I. Take it from us, almost 10 years later it's kind of really just overrated. We do date nights sometimes but currently saving for a wedding so trying to stay home as much as possible (which is fine as I enjoy staying home). Shouldn't be too long now and you'll be back home living the life you've ever dreamed of with your boyfriend (minus the bills & the adulting, of course which is never fun, haha)!

Aw I am SO chuffed for Emma!! That was awesome of you to help her out Kim! I look forward to seeing you guys meet up again sometime. <3 As for Valentine's Day – bless you! Big hugs. I spent many years alone on Valentine's Day before I finally moved from England to Germany to be with my boyfriend, and this year he had flu, haha! So I can totally relate. Pizza makes everything better though! I really hope your apartment hunt goes well too Kim. Also – YAY for the Pokémon walk and the Machamp! Still haven't got my Ninetales yet, damn it! Lots of love 🙂 xxx

It's kinda sad, that once you leave, there will be no videos with the other girls (Mimei, Sharla, Taylor,…) for a longer time. I always loved your logs together. But in the end, you will visit Japan anyway, right? ^^

You could also try out companies like Sakura House or Oak House. They also rent short term and apart from Share Houses also offer single apartments I believe! I lived in an Oak House residence when I lived in Tokyo and can't really complain, though it's a hit and miss depending on the location.

That's kind of how my boyfriend and I are. We buy whatever we want all the time, so presents for the holidays don't really matter. It's all about spending time together.

its kind of funny how a lot of the commenters are volunteering taylor's house lol. I agree about presents though lol. if anything my friends and I usually treat eachother to dinner/spend money on an experience like an expensive museum or something. I lowkey hate when people spend money on me and its an item I don't like or won't use.

why don't you try bamboo house? It's usually for foreigners staying in Japan for long vacations but you can rent month by month or week by week, and a bunch of their houses are by the yamanote! within five or ten min walks even
