It’s My First Time Renting In New York… What Now?

So if this is your first experience with a
New York rental, what do you need to know? I think the first thing you need to know is
that the process is not so easy. It’s not like just walking into a house and shaking
the owner’s hand. These buildings require an application package, which you have to
be prepared to submit. You have to be willing to share your financials, get letters from
your friends, and show that you have a history as a good tenant, or most landlords will not
take you in. Also, it’s important to note that, unlike in most cities, in New York the
fee to find a rental apartment is paid by the tenant to the agent rather than paid by
the landlord. And this is not common practice in other countries and in other cities. So
know that going in, what your costs are going to be. Typically broker’s fee, first month’s
rent, last month’s rent, security deposit, and a lot of paperwork.
