In Residence Ep 19: “Daniel Libeskind” by Matthew Donaldson

I’ve got the Fourth Street I’ve got Chambers Street I’ve got Hudson,
I’ve got West Broadway and it looks like a shot
from a Hitchcock film You look down, especially late at night and you see a couple of people walking with their shadows on the walls That’s New York, that’s the city! It’s emotional to live here To see Ground Zero,
from its dire tragic state to the fact that it’s now
a living neighborhood with – Since I started working on this project,
70,000 people have moved to this area It was kind of like an emptiness before – So I have a view of it
from my living room and my bedroom and I see it from the south from my studio So yes, I think they’re commited It’s not just a distraction, there’s a plan It’s being there I love it in the evening because
you can see how beautiful New York is New York is a beautiful place Every building is a sculpture Now it’s got plumbing,
so it’s not a pure sculpture but they are really
abstract works of sort of lives and I love looking at it You can look at that window
and notice there’s a lamp and there’s somebody sitting and there’s a red object I mean you can peer at it,
even without being a voyeur, to see that in this very condensed environment there is so much richness there’s so much…
It’s such an interesting place There are so many stories going on

There's no bigger phony in architecture than Libeskind, except maybe Thom Mayne. No, you're right, it's Libeskind.

There's no greater phoney in Architecture today. Everything he touches turns to kitsch.

I was one of those stories (1974-82). Wonderful times.
