HISTORY OF THE PLOTT HOUND | Waynesville, NC

>>THE INTELLIGENCE AND FIERCE
LOYALTY OF THESE DOGS IS WHAT REALLY SETS THEM APART.>>IN THE HILLS OF WESTERN NORTH
CAROLINA, YOU’LL HEAR TALES OF A LEGENDARY HUNTING DOG, BRED HERE
IN THE SMOKY MOUNTAINS, KNOWN FOR ITS TENACITY, LOYALTY, AND
INTELLIGENCE, ON AND OFF THE TRAIL.>>THEY WERE GREAT MULTIPURPOSE
DOGS. PEOPLE WERE USING THEM FOR
HUNTING, HERDING, PROTECTING THEIR FAMILIES. THERE ARE HISTORICAL REFERENCES
TO DOGS SAVING CHILDREN’S LIVES.>>THE PLOTT HOUND IS NORTH
CAROLINA’S OFFICIAL STATE DOG AND IF YOU DIDN’T KNOW THAT
LITTLE BIT OF TAR HEEL TRIVIA, YOU’RE NOT ALONE.>>YOU MENTION A CHIHUAHUA OR
ANY OTHER PURE BRED DOG, OH, YEAH, I KNOW WHAT THAT IS. YOU MENTION A PLOTT HOUND, THEY
GO WHAT’S THAT?>>I WAS SITTING AT A STOP LIGHT
AND ANOTHER HUNTER SAID WHAT KIND OF PLOTT HOUND IS THAT,
WHO’S SHE OUT OF? WE WERE SITTING AT THE STOP
LIGHT HAVING A CONVERSATION. THE AVERAGE PERSON, NO IDEA. IT’S AMAZING HOW MANY NORTH
CAROLINIANS DON’T KNOW THAT THIS IS THEIR STATE DOG.>>NO OTHER AMERICAN HOUND
SHARES THE PLOTT HOUND’S ANCESTRY, WHICH IS GERMANIC
RATHER THAN ENGLISH BREEDING. BREEDER BOB PLOTT IS ONE OF THE
ACCIDENTENTS.>>THE THE PLOTT FAMILY BROUGHT
THEIR DOGS WITH THEM AND PERPETUATED THAT LEGACY FOR
ALMOST THREE CENTURIES NOW.>>THROUGH CENTURIES OF NORTH
CAROLINA HISTORY, THE PLOTT HOUND’S BREEDING AND BLOODLINES
MAKE IT THE ONLY DOG TO ORIGINATE IN NORTH CAROLINA AND
ONE OF ONLY A FEW AMERICAN DOG BREEDS IN THE COUNTRY.>>YOU CAN SEE HERE THIS BRINDLE
COAT WE TALKED ABOUT EARLIER. THEN HE HAS THE DARK BASE COAT
WITH THE WHITE STRIPE, AND SHE’S ABOUT AN IDEAL SPECIMEN FOR A
FEMALE PLOTT.>>THIS HISTORIC HOUND’S NAME
COMES FROM THE PLOTT FAMILY AND THE STORY OF TWO GERMAN BROTHERS
WHO SET SAIL FROM HOLLAND TO AMERICA WITH THEIR FIVE HUNTING
DOGS IN 1750.>>ONE THING THAT’S REALLY
UNIQUE ABOUT THE VOYAGE OVER, TWO BROTHERS, MY THIRD GREAT
GRANDFATHER, HE HAD A BROTHER, SOME SAY HIS TWIN BROTHER, BUT
WE DON’T KNOW FOR SURE. THEY WERE 16, 17 YEARS OLD. THEREABOUTS. THEY TOOK THESE DOGS TO AMERICA
IN 1750. WELL, THE ONE BROTHER DIED
EN ROUTE. HERE’S A 16-YEAR-OLD BOY,
PROBABLY COULDN’T SPEAK ENGLISH. WE THINK MAYBE HE MAYBE CAME
HERE FOR RELATIVES OR HE MAY HAVE BEEN A CONTRACT HUNTER. HE CAME FROM A LONG LINE OF
GAMEKEEPERS IN THE BLACK FOREST OF GERMANY. IT’S LIKELY THAT HE WENT TO NEW
BERN, NORTH CAROLINA, WHICH MOST GERMAN IMMIGRANTS STAYED IN
PENNSYLVANIA OR IN THE SHENANDOAH VALLEY.>>SOME OF THE PLOTT FAMILY
SETTLED IN THE PIEDMONT, BUT HISTORIANS BELIEVE AROUND 1799,
GEORGE’S SON HENRY MADE HIS WAY TO THIS LAND IN HAYWOOD COUNTY,
WHICH NOW BEARS THE PLOTT FAMILY NAME.>>JUST CAME RIGHT UP THIS CREEK
HERE AND WHERE THE CONFLUENCE OF DIX CREEK AND RICHLAND CREEK
RIGHT OVER HERE BECAME PLOTT CREEK.>>THE OLD FAMILY HOMESTEAD NEAR
WAYNESVILLE IS WHERE YOU’LL FIND THE TAIL OF THE PLOTT HOUND.>>I GET A LOT OF THE PLOTT
FAMILY COMING BACK TO FIND WHERE THEIR ROOTS ARE AND TO FEEL A
PART OF THE HISTORY.>>THEY HAD WATER FOR THE DOGS
THERE. ALL THE DOGS HAD SHELTER OVER
THERE. OF COURSE, YOU HAD THIS
MAGNIFICENT MOUNTAIN RANGE ALL AROUND US HERE WHERE THEY HAD —
COULD GO OUT THEIR BACK DOOR LITERALLY AND HUNT BEAR, WHICH
THEY DID.>>THROUGH THE YEARS, THE THEME
OF THE SUPER HUNTING DOGS SPREAD LIKE FIRE. THE LEGACY OF THE PLOTT AND ITS
ALMOST MYTHICAL SKILL FOR HUNTING BEAR AND BOAR IS KNOWN
BY HUNTSMEN WORLDWIDE.>>THEY COULD PICK UP A TWO OR
THREE-DAY OLD TRAIL AND TRACK IT. THEY’VE GOT TO BE FIERCE AND
TENACIOUS TO BE AGGRESSIVE ENOUGH TO GO TOWARDS THE BEAR,
BUT THEY HAVE TO BE SMART ENOUGH NOT TO BE TOO AGGRESSIVE TO GET
HURT.>>ALTHOUGH FIERCE ON THE TRAIL,
THE PLOTT IS KNOWN FOR BEING PROTECTIVE AND LOYAL TO ITS
OWNERS, ESPECIALLY CHILDREN.>>THEY’RE EXTREMELY GENTLE
AROUND CHILDREN, EXTREMELY LOYAL TO THEIR MASTERS. THEY’RE JUST WONDERFUL DOGS.>>I KNEW IT FOR A PRETTY
GOOD — DON’T INTERRUPT ME WHILE I’M BEING INTERVIEWED, OKAY?>>AFTER WORKING ON A TRAVELING
EXHIBIT ABOUT THE PLOTT HOUND AT THE MOUNTAIN HERITAGE CENTER IN
CULLOWHEE, DAVID BREWIN FELL IN LOVE WITH THE IDEA OF OWNING A
PLOTT. HE SAYS OWNING NANNY IS LIKE
WALKING WITH A LITTLE PIECE OF HISTORY.>>SO MANY GREAT DOGS JUST CAME
RIGHT OUT OF THIS VALLEY HERE. YOU KNOW, NANNY’S PART OF THAT
FAMILY. I THINK IT’S — KIND OF GIVES ME
CHILL BUMPS SOMETIMES WHEN I START TO THINK ABOUT IT.>>OUR STATE DOG IS NOW THE
TOPIC OF AN EXHIBIT AT THE NORTH CAROLINA MUSEUM OF HISTORY. THE UNIQUE HERITAGE OF THESE
HOUNDS CAUSE MANY TO REFLECT ON THE PLOTTS’ PERFORM IN OUR
HISTORY AND THE FUTURE TRAILS THESE PLOTTS WILL TAKE.>>SOMETIMES WHEN SHE’S ON THE
TRAIL, YOU CAN HEAR HER. RIGHT NOW SHE JUST SEES
SOMETHING. SHE WANTS TO COMMUNICATE WITH.

What a great dog and a great video!!! I especially loved it when she howled — or "bayed" — a couple of times!!! Funny! It was as if she was telling her master, "C'mon DAD!!! Let's go track some animal !!!!"

I think i had one of these in my yard last night. I thought it was a boxer or pit bull mixed with a coonhound or something, not sure. I thought he was the cutest thing ever till he jumped up and humped me….barf.

I'd never heard of them until I adopted my dog. We were told she was Dutch shepherd until one day I ran across a Plott hound and was like oooooooo it's Nora's twin!

Dogs are so unbelievably amazing.
I have a vizsla lab mix.. which allegedly is a South Carolina hunting dog.. this is the closest video I could find but, still such a cool video. Very cool to see the lineage in human and canine after all these years.

Lost my 15 year old basset to age recently. Thinking about a Plott or a BMC, Thoughts anyone? primary will be wodland search and rescue. not urban. also. just curious…. what did the Plotts do during the civil war? and did they have slaves? (honest question, not meant for attacking the Plotts.)

I just figure out im a direct decedent on George Plott. I find it very interesting that after 10 generations, that the culture of hunting with dogs is still around. Even though the family has crossed state lines and not had the influence of the knowledge that we descended from plott.

Plott hounds are amazing dogs to own. Couple key things to happy ownership. They are usually a "pack" dog they will seem unsettled at home if they don't have another k-9 of comprable size strength and stamina. They are willful so you must demonstrate in a non aggressive manner that what you say and do is law. They will test your ability to be the alpha periodically through stubbornness as a behavior. This breed does not respond to aggressive owners who raise their voices or try to intimidate them. Remember it's very well documented that this breed is bred to track and hunt black bears that can weigh up to 300 lbs and boar weighing close to the same amount. They will not cower or submit to your aggression they will stand their ground. Their ability to retain episodic memories good and bad is very strong. They are highly intelligent you can test this simply by using simple commands and hand gestures when beginning training at home. It's creepy how quickly they comprehend what you're requesting them to do. That being said this breed will seek an abundance of love and affection from you their owner on a daily basis. They will protect and alertly guard the immediate area of wherever their master is. They are not dog or cat aggressive once properly introduced. This is an athletic dog with very powerful muscles. They require high quality proteins, omega 3s and omega 6s. This breed will win your heart over indefinately.

Pretty sure my boyfriend’s family dog Blue is a pitbull Plott Hound mix. He’s older but so gentle. My cat loves to nap with him and he’s a cuddler. He has a hound dog bark & does tend to wander when left outside alone.
