Custom LEGO apartment building begins!

hello everyone and welcome back to New Jang City where I have begun a new project I have done a fair amount of building over here on the left-hand side the extensions side for some number of months and now that I’ve been doing bits of MOC work on some actual structures and terrain and such this time I’m starting a little bit closer to the population center with my very first custom residence this is going to be a small apartment building over here and don’t worry about what you’re looking at just right now because the finished product will not look much like this at all this is only just the start after a few building sessions I showed on Instagram my very first image of when I had just begun the project and it’s it’s progressed a little bit since then don’t worry about the fact that there’s a whole lot of white around the back either you won’t be seeing a lot of that and all this empty space back here is deceptive as well the intention here is for this to be a modest sized building I think that when it’s completed it’ll be just three storeys tall in total and it’ll have accommodation for parking for residents around the side and/or the back I think mostly around the back so it’s it’s much smaller on the first floor than it will be above that so it’ll you know be different as it goes up this will actually be the very first time that I’ve really done a building that changes its size and shape as it goes from floor to floor most of the ones I’ve done have been fairly straightforward I mean the hospital does have a different floor plan completely on it’s its first you know it’s ground floor but this is really gonna extend that out quite a bit the very early parts of it started with just some experiments with color and texture went back and forth on a handful of things and kind of came up with an idea for what will happen again it’s gonna change shape when it gets to the second level fairly significantly and I want this to have kind of a modern feel to it I I’m not sure exactly where the inter the the inspiration is coming from for this I did go do some some searching around for modern and/or futuristic apartment designs and everything was either super super swoopy like like streamlined design almost or contemporary cubist almost everything out there actually if you search just for modern apartment building right now you’ll see contemporary cubism which is great and works really really well for lego of course but I just don’t want to do that I wanted to do something other than that and I definitely want to do something other than something curvy because you know the hospital right there is very curvy around its sides and also the black house building that I did some time ago one of my more recent structures was pretty curvier want to go with angles mostly hard angles on this one you’ll have some some triangular parts of it it will have some rectilinear parts of it I didn’t want it to be completely rectilinear though because that would also be boring I’ve done that a little bit too much as well just wanted to do something that’s different for me and that would fit into this space and would start to help provide a little bit of transition from the more commercial downtown area over to what will be a fully custom residential area you know this is just gonna be the very first building all the rest of my my housing will eventually be fully custom as well but this is where it begins I believe this will have five apartments are five dwellings in in total US economy I guess for for this city will be considered luxury accommodations or relatively high end accommodations should have one apartment on the ground floor and then two on each of the floors above although that is subject to change that’s just kind of my initial idea I’m able to segment segment things out a little bit a little bit better than that but you know that the center area will just be walkway in kind of lobby area there’ll be hopefully an elevator I would like to have stairs as well but it might have to stick to just having an elevator a little storage room on the right-hand side on that ground floor place for maintenance stuff and above that it’ll get a little bit more interesting fairly quickly hopefully so that’s just the beginning of it I’m designing as I go as I typically tend to do I’ve not done any any sketches in advance definitely haven’t done any digital designing or anything and I’m just button letting the pieces talk to me letting the space talk to me and letting I guess various inspirations that are already kind of stuck in the back of my mind that I can’t even directly place kind of you don’t direct me and as I go we’ll see how this goes I will continue to post hopefully some small little updates on Instagram if I have little things to show that aren’t really worthy of a full video and then the next time I have some significant progress I’ll show you another video which hopefully will be when I have at least the beginning of the next floor kind of the the floor plan for it plus hopefully some walls around the front and a little bit of another feature that may not be expected but yeah next video will come when I think there’s actually enough stuff to be worth doing a video as usual so thanks for watching and like I said stay tuned for more don’t don’t expect anything in particular based on what you’ve seen just here I’ll talk to you in as soon as I can

The apartment on the ground floor could be a disabled houes. It would make sence being on the bottem floor, and next the the hospital.

The front of the building looks very nice. I can't imagine anyone wanting to live next to all that noise pollution though. A hospital, police station and two train tracks? You may want to relocate or repurpose the building. Possibly a boutique? Looks like one from the front.

Sep 9, 2018, 11:24 pm Reply

Noise everywhere! Train tracks snake all around and through the city; almost nowhere is more than 1 or 2 blocks from a train line. It's the way it is 🙂 Lots of streets & car/truck traffic as well! Simulating true realism in LEGO is impossible without infinite space, so I make do with what I have 🙂

Hi JANGBRiCKS! I had to ask you to help me with something. My aunt has been fighting cancer for a while now. However, we don't have enough money to keep paying for her treatment. Her cancer is very serious so I needed to find ways to make money. I decided to sell all of my old legos. The price might seem a bit much but these lego sets are very rare and discontinued. I need your help because no one is buying them. My aunt might die soon if we can't pay for anything. Please help, and anyone reading the comments. Great work so far, love the color play. If you're going for luxury apartments, I say do a lounge and converge / mail room with a lounge area on the first floor, then 2 apartments on the two floors above that like you said, and end it with a penthouse up top, one your elevator goes directly too. That would be super LUX

Can you make a video for those of us that havent played with LEGO in 20+ years and are just now getting back into it? Specifically to cover topics of how to best buy kits/parts, what to look out for, what good prices are for loose bricks are etc? maybe another video on evolution of lego? And maybe yet another covering major building styles Lego used over the last 50 years? I noticed you talk about "style" once in a while in your videos, but to someone who hasnt been following for decades its hard to understand what you mean.

This is looking really good – I love the way the white, dark red and brown go together. I think it's great thet you'll break teh mold of contemporary cubism – the amount of new buildings in that style seems exessive at this point I think! And great to hear that you havn't planned everything out in digital designer and such – makes me feel more at ease with my own buidling 😀 Would you ever consider making a map of your city? It would be a cool way to get an overview of your huge city I think! Thanks for sharing your process and keep up the good work – can't wait to see the next update on this 🙂
