Ceramic Tile Floor Installation // Tiny Apartment Build – Ep.3

ceramic tile floor voiceover Today we’re going to apply ceramic tile
on the kitchen area of the new tiny apartment Just before we get started on the build, I
want to let you know that I have a few handmade notebooks for sale on the gethandsdirty online
shop along with brand new t-shirts, hoodies and sweatshirts from small all the way to
super big sizes. Also, they all come with specially made tags! So if you wanna support my work, these are
perfect for you or for your friends as a reminder to get your hands dirty. Take a look on my website and let’s get
started with the build! First thing I did was to lay on the floor
a few rectified porcelain tiles on the most visible and strangely angled corner oF the
room. I took my time taking measurements and figuring
out the correct angles and then cut the tiles using an angle grinder with a diamond disk. Once I got a good idea of the arrangement,
I put everything aside and started to prepare the adhesive which is basically a cement glue. I never used a notch trowel or applied tile
before so in the beginning it was a bit weird and spent a lot of time trying to make the
stripes look good. Since this porcelain tiles are so big, I had
to back butter the tiles, which means – applying the adhesive to the back of the tile in addition
to the floor. Also, the notches on the trowel need to be
quite big when you’re using big tiles. I rocked it back and forth perpendicular to
the cement lines in order to smash them and make a proper adhesion. Then I removed it just to see if it was working
the way it was supposed to. I started to install the second tile but then Ohhhkayyy so I picked up the wrong tile that
was already cut on the long side to fit near the angled wall and had to clean it up and
move on to the correct tile. On a lot of cases I ended up standing over
the tile and rocking it with my feet to make sure I could smash the cement properly and
get better aligned corners. This wasn’t very easy because all the tiles
were actually slightly bowed the same way, which made it very difficult to match the
corners with the middle portion on the tile next to them. At first I wasn’t going to use any spacers
because the tiles are rectified but then I ended up putting really thin ones to see if
I could disguise any misalignment a little better. I started to apply the tiles in one day and
finished on the next one, but next time I will try to start sooner and do it all on
the same day because I realized that some of the open corners were a bit too low or
too high, and I couldn’t do anything about it. That made the job much harder because I had
to place shims here and there for eye levelling them. I also made sure to clean the cement area
near the tiles to make sure there is enough space for the adhesive to spread and minimize
having the spacings filled up. Here you can see me skating over the tile
and trying to lower the corner. I let everything to dry and came back on the
next day to remove the spacers and cleaned everything. It’s time to mix the grout and force it
into the joints with a rubber trowel. I did work in small areas instead of doing
the entire floor and so I came back a few minutes after with a wet sponge to smooth
the grout joints and clean up some of the surface grout. Once I got it all done, I mopped the floor
three times after letting the grout rest for about two hours and it was done! I hope you enjoyed this episode with me getting
started working with materials I never worked before. Take a moment to subscribe to get notifications
for future projects on the tiny apartment series! On the next episode you will get a full idea
of what’s coming and how the space will be organized. A big shout out to all my Patreon supporters! Without them I couldn’t be releasing videos
as frequently and if want to support me and my work, take a look on my Patreon page as
well as my online store. Thanks everyone for watching and go get your
hands dirty!

Nice job! My wife and I lay some tile a couple years ago and it’s not that good. I also used a grinder and then I realized that it’s better use the machine to cut tile, I don’t know the name but it’s manual, also, it’s better to begging from the center and move towards the walls, and cut all the non complte parts at the end, I also used those spacers, but now there’s a better system, wich I plan to use for my next project. Any way, looks great ?

Looks very nice! Depending on the finish of the tiles, it might be good to use a sealant on the floor. That should make it easier to keep clean. Keep up the great work!

Bom trabalho.

Really awesome but I don't understand how the grout works, when you are troweling it in it gets all over the tile surface, do you wipe this away before the two hours of drying? Just thinking if it dries over the 2 hours it will be very hard to remove? But then if you're sponging over the freshly laid grout doesn't that also kind of wipe it away from the area it's supposed to be in

Also did you lay anything between your adhesive and the base floor? I just see that in other tutorials and I suppose it's meant to support the tile as well as make it easier to remove if the tile needs to be removed in the future?

First time ? Wow ! I know "professionals" here less careful than you. Just in case you don't know that, I suppose Portugal, like Spain, have normatives regulating maximum bend for tiles, maybe separating tiles in categories ( "1st class", "2nd class", …). Thanks for sharing !

When your working with a large format tile that is bowed, it’s much easier to lay them with a 1/3 split instead of 1/2. This eliminates the lippage you experienced as you don’t have to try and line up a corner with the middle of another tile. Good effort nonetheless ??

Next time you decide putting such a big tile format you could look at tile leveling systems for sure. Long tiles can be curvy by itself so pinched corners or waved edges are inevitable. Leveling clips could help as much as possible for such a sturdy (and fragile) material.

Pretty good for a first timer, I personally always hated the grouting part. Did a lot of this on floors and walls many years ago, quite satisfying when done well. Btw a rubber mallet is quite good at gently persuading tiles to be level with their neighbors, also you need to precheck the total dimensions and start the first course in both directions cut so that you don't end up with a very thin cut on the opposite edges (i.e. even boarders).

here is a top tip: try laying them either whole rows or in a "stair shape". Thus you can avoid having to lay one in between two from the for-day as you had to at 4:55.
also: i wouldn't pre-cut tiles… cause when you shift by 1 or 2 mm this adds up over multiple rows and might lead to a non-fitting tile at the wall 😉
however: pretty nice result at the end there – as usual 😉

I just got my new tiny house, a lot of things still need to be done and its gonna be too expensive for me to hire people for every single work that my house needs to get so i decided to do as much as i possibly can for my house with the help of my Dad and my husband. My husband and I already finished painting the house, my dad is working on my stairs now. Hopefully we can do the flooring next. More power to you keep up the good work!
