Affordable apartments open for rent in Kalaeloa

Kalaeloa has been given new life— and will soon be providing much needed affordable housing for Oahu. Hunt Company held its blessing and grand opening today for it’s Wakea Garden Apartments. There are 100 one bedroom units that will rent for 1200- 1500 dollars a month–depending on income. Each unit is about 490 square feet. They used to be bachelor officer quarters at Naval Air Station Barber’s Point. Jose Bustamante is the vice president of Hunt Companie’s Hawaii division. His family has lived in the area for decades and he remembers what happened once the base was decommissioned. JOSE BUSTAMANTE, VP HUNT COMPANY HAWAII DIVISION:”IT WAS A TOUGH SITUATION. IT WAS ABANDONED IN 2006. IT WAS GRAFFITI LADEN ALL OVER THE BUILDING. IT WAS A SITE FOR ARSON, FOR ILLEGAL DUMPING. A LOT OF EQUIPMENT AND INTERIOR OF THE BUIDLING WERE RIPPED, STOLEN OR DAMAGED. SO IT TOOK A LOT OF EFFORT TO TRY TO RENOVATE THE BUILDING AND BRING IT BACK.” Hunt spent more than 12 million dollars on the project. This is the company’s first residential project in its 20 year plan to redevelop and revitalize more than 500 acres in Kalaeloa. About half of the units are taken. The first residents are expected to move in tomorrow. For more information on renting at Wakea Garden apartments….. Just go to the as seen on section of KITV.com
