$1,250 Rent: Miami Vs. Chicago

(upbeat electronic music) – Hi, my name is Katie. Welcome to my apartment in Miami, Florida. I live in a one bedroom, one
and a half bathroom apartment. It’s about 800 square feet
and it cost me $1250 a month. Come on in. – Hey guys, my name is
Dolores and I live 20 minutes right outside of downtown Chicago. I pay about $1250 for rent, and I have a pretty awesome apartment. So let’s come check it out. (upbeat hip hop music) – Welcome to my apartment,
let me show you around. So this is my kitchen. The main highlights of the kitchen are that I have a dishwasher. Not something you get in every city. I also have granite countertops
which is really amazing. It comes with obviously
the fridge, a microwave, and stove and oven. And I have tons of cabinet space. So, I’m never running
out of anything I need. I can go to Costco and stock up, there’s plenty of room for everything. (energetic hip hop music) – The kitchen to me is a good size. And I love it because
it is an eat-in kitchen. So we have a table and
four chairs in here, which is awesome. And I love the fact that we
have a lot of counter space because I absolutely love to cook. The one thing that we don’t have that I wish we did have
was the dishwasher. That kinda sucks at times, but growing up, unfortunately I was my mom’s dishwasher so I am used to washing dishes, but I do wish that we
had that because it would make my life so much easier. – So I finally get to live
like an adult in Miami and I have a table that seats
six, which is excellent. I can have people over, I can entertain, something I was not able to do before when I lived in Los Angeles. – The next room is one of the
prettiest rooms in here to me. And this is our dining room, and I’m like really big
on having people over and entertaining because honestly when you broke and you
don’t have any money you can’t be going out
to dinner and eating. You know it was really important to me to find an apartment
that had a pretty awesome dining room and just a
dining room in general. A lot of apartments
don’t have dining rooms, they just have a living/dining combo. But we have a completely
separate dining room, and it’s actually huge. – This is our living room. If I’m working from home, I’m
usually working on the couch. Pizza night, movie night, taco night, any night happens in our living room. – Our living room to me is perfect. It’s a huge living room, and
normally the living rooms are not this big. This is like bigger than the living room that I’ve seen in a lot of houses. I love the fact that we have enough space. We can fit two couches
in here and two chairs. And so I think the most
amount of people that we’ve ever had in here was
probably like 30 people. We do have two bedrooms,
but me and my husband don’t have any children, it’s
just us, which is like amazing ’cause I get to get and
keep all of my sleep. So, we turned our second
bedroom into a man cave. Now, I don’t come in here that often, but my husband is in here all the time. And as you can probably see,
he’s a big fan of comic books: DC, Marvel Comics. And this is like his own little space. – One of the perks about living here is that I have not one, but two bathrooms. I have a half bath, which is pretty much
designated to my cat Carlos. It’s got his turf, but it’s
great for if guests are over to have somewhere to
go and they don’t have to come into my bedroom
to go to the bathroom. – This is my bedroom. As you can see, it is a very cozy bedroom. It is not as big as I would like it to be, but it’s not too small either, and it’s that perfect size
where it’s absolutely cozy. So, this is like literally one
of the most important rooms in the house for various reasons. – So this is my bedroom. One of the things that
I love about this space is that it just feels huge. I’ve never had a bedroom that’s this big. I like the space, I feel like it’s open, and it also leads you right
into my favorite part: my walk-in closet. As you can see, I’m in
desperate need of clothing. I’m running out. But all my clothes, my shoes, my purses, everything fits in here wonderfully. And then it leads you right
into my master bathroom. Everything I need is in here. It’s great for the price. – I’m completely not
satisfied with the size; it’s gonna be our bathroom. It is really small. If you sit right here,
and the radiator is on, your leg will be screaming
because it’s slowly getting burned while you’re
trying to use the bathroom. This tub is brand new. So, sometimes you get in apartments, and the tubs are kind of
like on the chafey side, but this one is awesome. (upbeat hip hop electronic music) – One of my favorite things is
that I have access to a pool, in my building. It’s great amenity to have and it’s a great entertainment space. So this is my pool. It’s great to have a gym in your building. We have free weights,
ellipticals, treadmills, bikes, anything you need. I don’t have to get a gym membership and it’s all included in my rent. – This is the absolute,
and I know I’ve called every room my favorite, but
this is literally the best room. This is my walk-in closet. Cue the angelical music. (melodious angelical music) Oh my God. As you can see, I have
all my shoes on this wall. I love being able to have
all of my shoes on display for my girlfriends and myself
to see, I mean I just love it. I think it makes paying the amount of rent completely worth it
because I have not seen any other apartments where
you get a closet this big that can fit all this stuff, and actually have the display that I have. – I have my own parking space! That’s one of my favorite
parts about living in Miami. I have parking. I can leave my building, hop
in my car, go to the beach, be there in five minutes. Having a parking spot is like everything in major cities in the US. – I really appreciate you guys checking out the tour with me. Now you see what $1250 will give you in the suburbs of Chicago. An amazing living and dining area, an awesome eat-in kitchen, and
an absolutely cozy bedroom, an absolutely for real for
real amazing walk-in closet. – So come to Miami for the sun and the space and the affordability. It’s literally like living in paradise. I have a dishwasher, I have parking, I have a gym, I have a pool. You’ll absolutely love it here. – [Both] See you later. (upbeat hip hop music)

Most places I have seen in Florida are small. The bigger and nicer, the more expensive. She must be in the outskirts of MIami. I am not familiar with Chicago, only NYC. I don't like that the Miami home master bedroom window faces the street with easy access to inside view. I'm not a fan of walking through the closet to get to the bathroom, but it reminds me of Carrie's room in Sex and the City. I like her appliances. Access to a pool and gym is great. Having your own parking space is major. As for the Chicago place, the eat in kitchen is convenient and the kitchen a good size for an apartment. The size of most of her rooms is really good. I am not crazy about having only one bathroom in my home. I loved how excited she was about her closet. Both apartments seem decent sized and nice. Both ladies made good hostesses. Thank for sharing.

Wow!!! I live in Maui, these places are amazing especially for the price. Miami blew me away, pool and gym…wow! Chicago felt like a home, I loved them both. Chicago how is your parking?!

The girl that lives in Miami lives in a condo not an apartment. The owner of the condo sets the price not a rental property company. That is probably why her rent is so low. Just so you know a 1 bedroom/1.5 bath condo recently sold for $90k in her building. I had no idea you could still buy property for under $100k in a major city.

Miami condos are that expensive to rent because the property taxes are quite high. You can pay more for a 1-bedroom on Brickell than for a 5 bedroom house in Kendall (in taxes)

Like,, just move inland, my man. In the Midwest, (especially Oklahoma) you can get a 4000 sq. ft. house for 1,400-1,600 a month, and it’s super cheap to live in North Dakota and Kansas. People are generally nice too and there’s more than one season. I dunno I’ve always lived in the Midwest and the South so I don’t really understand the appeal of highly populated cities ?

It's doable just not easy. Look around and tough it out for a while until you can find something adorable. Might not be a walk in the park, but it's ridiculous to be saying that that's impossible.
